I know NZ is up against it but from what I've seen, this Australian team is complete rubbish and NZ should come back from this and easily draw this test without breaking a sweat. There is really nothing impressive about this Australian team apart from a couple of nice lucky catches. Really, their batsmen have just played through the line and got away with it. NZ just need to stay calm and not worry about it. It's a typical Australian play-your-shots pitch. Only thing to do is not panic.

Australia have had everything go their way this match, apart from the Hazlewood injury. That said, they have already outfielded us and their bowlers are just that much better, even taking differing conditions under consideration.

yeah they've been incredibly lucky and they're still rubbish tbh.

just gotta outlast them this test then punish them in the next one. Their batting lineup ends at 4 and if any batsman gets set should be able to kill these rubbish straigh up and down bowlers. Hazelwood is the only good one and he's gone.

What an awesome day’s play. The night session just adds another dimension to test cricket.
Its genuinely enthralling. I absolutely love day night cricket. I remember posting that I had no time for the format before it begun, that it would render Test cricket stats unusable (this was when guys were having genuine issues seeing it) etc...but I couldn't have been more wrong. I'd happily advocate for as many as them as possible to address viewership both at the ground and on TV.

I love that the seamers get an extra go at dusk. I love that declarations are now a different consideration on time of day. It's just revitalized it all.

On the contrary, de Grandhomme to top-2 score from No. 8, you'll see. A free and easy Julio looking right at home with the bat in this series. He and Clarkson then combine to become a Devine and Bates duo of future BBLs.
Haha, genuinely just forgot CdG is in to bat next. The Wagner dismissal does make the scoreline seem worse than it is. Still don’t see them getting back into this.

You never know. Pakistan seemed out of it at 96-6 and fought back in the last test. With Hoff injured this could be a disaster. Seems like an intriguing test.

NZ just has to bat as long as possible. Runs almost not a consideration tbh. Even if they grind out say another 150 odd (they’ll make more than that given the attack) they need to do it over more than two sessions so australia is looking at batting against the new ball under lights tonight. Better still if nz is still batting tonight.

If they roll over by mid-second session today then they’re probably ****ed, even though Australia only has three bowlers.

You could make a lot of money if you bet on NZ now. I'm genuinely jealous of your optimism

Disappointing session with the bat, expected a lot better from Kane. Effectively dismissed twice in his 30 odd, the others threw their wickets away or simply weren't good enough for this level. With Kane you expect better and he was the only batsmen who was comprehensively beaten by the Aussies.

Up to Taylor, Watling and co. to get us to a decent first innings total. Might be too early and dreaming but 300+ would be fantastic, on the other end we could always be knocked over for less than 200 and be really under the pump.

Everything gone their way?

NZ are lucky they didn’t make 600 tbh.

How many wickets did they take traditionally behind the bat? Australia got themselves out.

Burns - non review
Warner - 1/1000 c&b
Lauba- bowled around his legs
Smith - caught in leg gully
Head - caught in cover
Starc - Caught at mid off
Lyon - caught at fine leg

Then they lose Hazlewood in the 3rd over.

People need to give credit sometimes...

I agree you have to Give Australia credit so far but the Smith wicket in particular was a clear plan. Did you watch the lead up, it was perfectly executed by Wagner.

The issue I had with the nightwatchman was how deep NZ already bat. Santner at 9 now ahead of hit or miss 6outhee and the injured Ferguson.

The one thing im nervous about today is if NZ reach say 225 and they take 50 overs, Australia may stupidly bat for 25 overs (make say 125) and declare to bowl under lights. It would mean NZ would be chasing just 310-330, surely we wont do this but you never know..

I would love a dumb Aussie declaration and for Warne et al to collectively fellate Paine while NZ chase it down 5 down

They won the toss and batted in 40 degree heat on a pitch designed to speed up from day 2 and have so far bowled at night. One of the opposition's bowlers has also been injure since pretty much the beginning of the match.

Not outrageous to suggest a few things have gone their way.

It's ok though they'll either draw or lose from here, their luck has run out I reckon.

If NZ gets rolled cheaply from here, I don't see Paine doing anything other than batting until Australia is bowled out, given the injury to Haze. They might get rolled themselves anyway, but I imagine he'd not want to bowl again until late day 4 if possible, preferably with the game out of NZ's reach entirely. Losing Haze is bad, blowing up Starc or Cummins for a real gamble at a quick kill is enough for him to never play, let alone captain again. It's only the first test. I think (and hope) he plays it conservatively and bats as long as possible.

Damn- Starc too good - he always looked like would get kane out. Great bowling.

Was getting so hopeful just before kane got out lol.

Still , would be great to show some fight and at least test the Aussies out a bit rather than falling over easily
