If NZ want to progress they really need to create competition in the seam bowling department, they've got a few options, now they need to get it across that performing like Martin or Southee have for any length of time will see you jettisoned. You can't make 37+ average against Test sides or 40+ average for an entire career be enough to keep you as a regular Test player. That doesn't mean going down the England 1990s route and picking names out of a hat, but there has to be competition and a genuine earning of a spot, not just we think this guy is one of our better bowlers so we'll just stick with him for several years regardless.

The one to Williamson was a genuine ripper, he had to play at that one with the angle that it was going at the beginning. Ross Taylor's was not a good shot at all.

Nah they were both wide. It was even a worse dismissal considering he played and missed playing the exact same shot the ball before.

Tell us about Phil Hughes's dismissals TumTum.
Not as bad, but poor execution. It was there to be hit. Made to look worse because he was just dropped.

Just imagine the criticism Warner would have got if he top edged that pull shot through mid-on.

I'm sorry, Williamson's was worse than Hughes? Playing a back cut with three slips and two gullies isn't as bad? It was as bad as Vettori and Brownlie's and they were hideous.

Don't think the fact he was dropped had a lick to do with it. No, I guarantee it doesn't. A Test opener playing that shot to that ball with that field is inexusable. No matter what the score.

Want to give credit where credit's due for the off drive Warner played before that hook shot? That dripped soaking wet of class.

I reckon Taylor's dismissal was made to look worse because Williamson got out the ball before personally.

Nah, it was awful, his feet were in no position basically the whole time and the ball wasn't hitting the stumps; the line was completely different to the ball before. His head was a mile outside off stump - nothing wrong with that, but he should know that therefore the ball will be outside the line of the stumps. Just get the bat out of the bloody way.

However, stuff like that can happen first ball. Still bloody awful though.

I was just mocking TumTum's reasoning.

I rated Pattinson's first wicket in the over his best. Very hard to sway out of the way of a delivery bouncing into your armpit. Even tougher at the start of the days play when the feet have yet to begin moving.

Was just watching the Patto 5-for again...what exactly happened with the hattrick ball there? It looks like it goes under the bat, but I'd swear it is swinging in enough to crash into leg stump.

Yeah it went under the bat, but it was quite far from leg stump, probably about 2 1/2 to 3 stumps away in fact.

I thought it was a tame dismissal from Guptill. Since he's quite a tall, upright player I acknowledge that it's difficult early on in the day, but he didn't show he wanted it enough for mine, he should have let it hit him.

It was nice to see an Australian quick get a bat pad dismissal, it's not been a place for catches recently.

Enjoy the bat pad catch off a fast bowler too. Such a feature of our bowling plans during the late 80's and 90's was to have David Boon in position for the likes of McDermott, Hughes, Lawson, Reid etc to bang it into that region.
