Recorded the game and just finished watching it now. Great game to watch, and a superb last over from Patel. Not sure it was the best shot choice needing four off the last ball, but it would have been hard to get that one to the boundary anyway.

Chapman will play for NZ in T20 sooner rather than later...hits it in such weird and wonderful places, which Hesson loves. Plus adds plenty in the field and with the ball.

Milne, who had just started to come right from a elbow problem, went to Christchurch to train with the New Zealand squad recently and got a side strain.

Milne is out for about six weeks and is likely to be back during the one-day competition next month.

Hope he's good, didn't watch him. It's quite hard to figure who's got the goods for the long run at U19 level. There are so many variables that can make/break young players. I see so many promising kids come and go. There are good talents but the investment in development by the system is terrible to say the least. There is a lot of reliance on the individuals to cut their own in NZ. The system is pretty much absent both at provincial and nation levels. The players that come through will come through due to sheer will and love for the sport. Unfortunately that happens one in hundred. The scoreboards don't always tell a story. You could be playing on a terrible surface, smallish ground (Lincoln green for eg) etc The catching/wicket keeping may be so poor that a bowler supposed to take 5 fer ends up with no wickets. Trust me it happens so frequently it's not a flash in the pan.

We have the tendencies to develop players at Black Caps level. How do you otherwise explain no 19s tours or any internationals for a year? The likes of Namibia, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka that aren’t all that rich have good A and 19s tours but we don’t. NZ Cricket is all about looking after some assets at the top level, that’s about it.

There are some serious talents in the 19s in the last two years that could be world beaters but I suppose they aren’t going to fulfil that unless they are absolutely hard willed and downright stub born achievers. The thought does cross if these kids were in say Aussie, India, SL or anywhere (but for NZ or perhaps Zimbabwe) they would end up world class. Bottom line, we don’t know to manage talent in cricket. Should take a leaf out of NZRU and see how they nurture the promising talents.

Sounds like a rant but trust me this is the reality.
Thanks for this, that is disappointing about the lack of development or under 19 tours. I remember after NZ were rolled for 45 in South Africa the ICC made a development grant and NZC arranged some A tours afterwards. Hopefully those are restored.

I just finished Michael Clarke's book & was struck by how committed he was to developing his game, despite back problems. He had under 19 tours and the cricket academy, but found steps up in grade cricket were a major part of his development.

It sounds like there is some progress with some provinces, I just looked up Finn Allen and saw this story about about the future aces programme.

watching Finn Allen in U23s indoor cricket is pretty funny. My mate is decently quick and played against him. At one end there's some kid who can barely get bat on ball then he's at the other end smacking everything as though it's slow-medium.

N Mac suggesting the radar needs to be winded up.

I thought last televised match I saw it seemed to slow, also was ND, with kuggs seeming 5 to 10kph too slow.

Yeah this isn't new. Whenever you see our internationals bowlng in domestics they're always about 5k slower than in internationals. Southee tends to max out at 130k, Boult generally hovers in the mid 130's and Milne around the 145 mark. Likewise, last year Ferguson was toppng out at around 145 and now he's hitting 150 in internationals. Presumably they must use cheaper speed reading equipment in domestics.

Or, for TV ratings, they rank up the speed in the internationals.

Nice to see Ben Horne backing up his match-winning knock against Bangladesh with some runs for Auckland in the Super Smash.

[Hamish Marshall] is the epitome of one innings every so often to make sure he can retain a contract...
Don't agree. He is normally in the top 3 or 4 FC run scorers for Gloucestershire. Don't think his contract has ever been at risk.

Last 5 FC seasons, 79 games, 4284 runs @ 38, 11 x 100s and 21 x 50s.

Hasn't always been selected in white ball cricket over the past few season, but had a reasonable season last year, List A 203 runs @ 34 at SR 83, T20 298 runs @ 21 at SR 131.

Those are pretty mediocre stats tbf.

Yup, at FC level when young promising players are pushing the county ticket, I'd suggest an average of 38 for an older specialist batter is probably just enough to hold his spot.

Is anyone else having trouble with the Blackcaps.co.nz website? It looks like it has been updated, but I can't get the scorecards to work. Which is a problem as ND seem to be doing quite well against Wellington, but my wife has commandeered the TV remote and I figure I should score some brownie points before the ODI tomorrow.
