Astle, **** yeah!

Delighted for him. I'm far to old to be a fanboy, but I've really enjoyed watching his improvement since Colombo.

This should count, v SC opponents, and only seen first innings wickets so far - but they were guile rather than his big ripping leg breaks.

Brilliant chase going on in Nelson. Blundell & Pollard really kicking on nicely.
Yes, CD's bowling attack doesn't have much wicket-taking but it's still pretty good to chase 300 in 60ish overs on the final day. All aboard the Blundell train, toot toot.

How often have CD done this in recent years with Wellington though. Chases on 4th afternoons in New Zealand actually rewarding the sporting declaration-makers are becoming as rare as hen's teeth. It's always a draw or a batting win.

Time to give out half points for wins where a declaration has meant the winning team hasn't taken 20 wickets.

In this game, at least Wellington were proactive - declaring behind to try and force a win, but it still feels awfully contrived.

Could definitely see a team that has only just managed to avoid an innings defeat declaring at 9 down and setting the opposition 15 to win in 4 sessions just to be spiteful if this happened though.

If only we could be like that Dubai Sports Academy ground. the one that actually imports the cricket world's various surfaces. I really want to live to see some genuinely difficult batting conditions on Plunket Shield final afternoons (rather than these contrived, quasi limited overs chases all the time).

You're still banging that drum? The selectors have come out and said Santner is the all rounder cover, he isn't the back up spinner.
I think he is saying Tastle could be good enough to be considered an all rounder. Would bat 7 with BJ at 6. Which would be the sensible thing to do with Santner as well until he gets a few more runs under his belt.

Astle isn't anywhere near good enough to bat seven in test cricket.
neither is Santner.

Look I don't really want to go on about it and I agree they're not really competing for the same spot. I just hope that Astle isn't completely shelved after he's clearly worked on what the selectors wanted (a bit more pace through the air).

He's our best-performing first class spin bowler not named Jeetan Patel. I hope that earns him a squad position when we next need a second spinner because he deserves another shot.

His other 2nd innings wickets were found to be more ass than class; sorry about that.

Yeah if Nicholls has a great season and they get Latham back for five rounds, I like Canterbury a lot there. Even McCone's action is looking improved these days, shaping it back into the right-handers' pads.

Also talk of the weather being very dry this summer, which could help Tastle.

The TAB's headquarters are in Wellington, yeah. :p

There often appears to be very little human intervention over the top of what the computer modelling tells them with domestic cricket odds, I find.
