Just seen Auckland's batting line up. Below the top 3 and Hopkins it's all icing. Munro at 4!
It definitely feels weird to think that a side that had to bat Munro at four still needed to bowl de Grandhomme at first change.

Munro's earned the right to have a crack at being an icing player anyway though with the runs he's scored lower down. It's not all been downhill skiing.

Guptill with back to back tons now. Not a big fan of his in the longer format but good to see him and others scoring runs from the top.

Yes I don't really want to see him back in the test side either. I would assume that Redmond is the backup test batsman after playing in Dunedin, with Latham being monitored very closely.

Not Terrible
I'd go

McCullum opening with Ryder in the team, unchanged rest of lineup.

Alternatively straight swap openers would go

Guptill > Flynn > Redmond > Latham > Papps > Anyone else in the country > Jeet Raval

not really, we can see if he has gotten rid of the hard hands and playing in front of his body. Those were probably his biggest two technical deficiencies.
yeah that's true, but I actually think playing in front of his body works out really well for him in ODIs. Like Shane Watson, he's built a career out of bullying bowlers by hitting them straight down the ground. Using his height and playing through the line of the ball is exactly what makes him successful in ODI cricket while also making him unsuitable to test cricket.

We'll see though. He might be more compact now.

Just fapping over Latham's boundaries now tbh. So nice to see a batsman that can actually pull and hook as well as play those gorgeous cover drives.

A few weeks ago when he was making those 50s he was definitely making an effort to play the ball late and with softer hands and a flex in his front knee. People forget just how much Guptill unravelled at the end. He wasn't batting like ODI Guptill at all. ODI Guptill in tests came at the start of his test career and saw him make 30 (40) all the time which was frustrating but then he progressively put shots away until he was left with the straight drive, which early on can be a high risk shot. He got low scores, he lost confidence and began losing balance with locked knees playing in front of himself to the first line he saw when playing straight and lunging forward at spinners. We joke about how he can't play spin but he was one of the few New Zealand batsmen to succeed against Narine at home.

Guptill was basically a case study of what happens when you play a talented guy who is good in ODIs but hasn't played a lot of FC cricket with any success - he doesn't know how to construct an innings so plays them like an ODI then gets told no, he has to do this, shelve that, so he starts taking lots of free advice and trying to learn at the top level. Never works, and we almost ruined him.

Yeah, that's probably a fairer appraisal than I usually give. He still doesn't deserve to be next in line for a test spot though, at least 2-3 players ahead of him.

For people not on parents dinosaur data plans, has Flynn learned to drive yet?
5 nice cover drives, a square drive, and on drive to go with some absolutely murderous cuts and pulls. Still definitely a back foot dominant player but yes, he can drive. I think he always could, he just decided he needed to shelve the shots after seeing the rest of the black caps crumble to shots they shouldn't have been playing.

Interesting. I've seen him drive but they're Kirk Edwards drives - front foot is still moving on contact and he's just planting it a bit. Is it like that or real, genuinely good driving?

Flynn has always been able to drive, he just shelved it from his test game because he got out to it too much. It is genuinely good driving, but risks being done for pace or by movement as its slightly loose
Edit: What Hendrix said
