Slightly disappointed that CD didn't play Mathieson as well. I guess the coaching staff figured they didn't need two low-140's longhop merchants in the same side. But Mathieson has had a decent start this season, and probably deserves a decent run.

If CD can keep their pace bowlers fit they should be a shot at the Plunket Shield. Their batsman always seem to be good (with Sinclair leading the way) but their bowlers have often been unable to win matches.

So they decided instead to include a 34 year old journeyman with an abysmal record. Everything that is wrong with domestic cricket in NZ right there folks.

Yep I thought hard about CD too, even if they can't stay fit maybe they're a chance. I read Badenhorst was spitting tacks to miss out in the first round of contracts to Mathieson, he'll come in with something to prove.

Not exactly singing a Dave Dobbyn welcome to Jeet Raval in these provincial papers either I've noticed. Robinson or Cachopa to open in the HRV Cup I guess Flem?

Arnel can't do it all you mean. Aldridge isn't 100 percent and being really honest isn't the bowler he was 18 months ago while Baker really isn't much more than a club bowler (at this stage anyway). With Boult now in the NZ setup for good and the young fellas like Mathieson moving the bowling depth around here is going to be stretched a little bit I reckon.

Batting will come right. Wilson will start scoring runs soon while both Anderson and Mitchell are serious young players. Wheater too should be good once he finds his game in NZ conditions.

Wouldn't have a clue who they'll pick, but Robinson is from Taranaki so I hope it's him. He looks a bit uncomfortable against the short stuff though, so might be given some time out from the long form.

Or maybe he was just having a bad day at the crease. It was his FC 50 for any who are wondering.

Badenhorst sliced through a pretty handy Taranaki team the other day, as Athlai likes to remind me. He should look into playing for Zimbabwe imo.

Yesss another wicket. That partnership was starting to worry me. Howsie, have ND decided what they want Devcich to be yet? He's done everything from be a specialist bowler to opening the batting. He'll keep wicket next.

Thought Baker looked a decent domestic bowler from clips I saw, plus iirc took a reasonable number of wickets last season. Also, didn't you pick him as top wicket-taker of the season?

He's solid, nothing special but there should be no reason why he couldn't become a good first class bowler.

Verma's been busy with Uni exams and all that, he would've played against Otago instead of Goodin otherwise. Played for WV this past week and scored a few runs up the order against some pretty decent attacks. Will add a lot at eight once he's good to go.

Devcich just isn't that good. Plenty of ability just an average technique. Shouldn't be batting any higher than six but can see him scoring runs on a flat deck later on in the season.

As a laugh. I don't particularly rate him

He's alright, a poor mans Arnel I've always thought. He's Bradburn's pet project though, so he's been given plenty of chances the likes of Mathieson never got. A kid that went to an average cricketing school, didn't play any age group stuff, Bradburn is determined to make him into something.

He's really accurate and has a nice bowling action. But he's pretty tame pace wise and struggles if there isn't anything in the pitch. Impressed Darren Lehmann while he was over with the Queensland Bulls though so maybe I'm just not seeing something.

Anyway, ND always has a good bowling attack no matter who is in it, it's just one of those things in NZ cricket, like how CD are always good at batting and Wellington are always ****.

Quietly pleased with Upper hutt's premier div team - we won the game today. had to battle against dane hutchinson charging in.

Grade cricket in general is awesome to watch - the quality of the ball striking is terrific,

Err don't be lumping English domestic cricket in with New Zealand. There are probably 2-3 awful teams, but just as many if not more who'd be a match for any domestic side out there.

The depth is pretty good considering the number of players involved.

Read again and you'll see that I wasn't commenting in the slightest on the comparative standard in New Zealand and England; I was saying that a good Grade player who hasn't quite made it in Australia would be good enough to do OK in either. QED!

Decent BBQs, as in he's a big guy? Definitely not the case. Mark Chapman is a lil fella, part Asian - has already played for Hong Kong I think? Bowls left-arm offies and very technically correct batsman.

I'd wondered where Chapman had disappeared to-he was one of Hong Kong's best players at a stupidly young age (several of his team-mates were old enough to be his dad..almost grandad!) but hasn't played for them since April 2011. I guess he's relocated, in which case he's got to be a future FC player. I hope he gets some "A" games this season.

I don't think he ever relocated - always been at King's College in Auckland as far as I'm aware. Just linked up with HK every now and then as a benefit to both parties.
