*Official* New Zealand 'A' v Sri Lanka 'A'

Before they annoucned the NZ 'A' squads, they also named 4 reserve players in:

Chris Harris, Ross Taylor, Aaron Redmond and Matthew Walker.

I guess Walker will start then.

Tuffey is not going to have an operation, but the NZ manager said rest is what he needs.

I haven't heard anything about Bond playing in the NZ 'A' 3rd Test.

Well werent you the one yeasterday on MSN telling me Bond is going to play?
Yeah I said Bond was going to play the One Dayers not the Test match. Although he might play on Saturday given Matthew Walker would be the third seamer which isn't all too convincing...

They interviewed Bond tonight on 3 news...it looks promising that he'll be ready for England (touch wood).

jeez I hope not - Bond playing that is.................
1 club game & then they want him to play a 4 day match - sounds like too much too soon - rather he got some match time in the 'A' ODIs................

yeah I saw the reserves list & Walker is about the only seam bowler, but strictly medium paced isn't he?????

I was wondering if he is a realistic prospect or if they'd take the opportunity to draft in a genuine MF / FM................

another 500+ 1st innings scoreline for NZ 'A', with 6 batsmen scoring around 50 or better - highlighted by maiden F/C centuries to Wiseman & Martin (sort of goes a long way to negating Vettori's batting advantage), with Martin being not out at the innings close..........

Franklin then shows some form with the ball (to go with his 49 runs) to knock the top off the SRL 'A' batting with some quick wickets.............

:)

Here's the side for the 1st ODI on Saturday:

Chris Harris (capt), Shane Bond, James Franklin, Jamie How, Gareth Hopkins, Hamish Marshall, Bruce Martin, Michael Mason, Kyle Mills, Mathew Sinclair, Ross Taylor, Lou Vincent.

Bond hopes to play the 1st and 3rd ODI's, while Astle must not be ready yet. They've obviously decided they've seen enough of Nevin and Matthew Walker for a while, with Gareth Hopkins making the XII.

Hopkins' top score in the SS was only 48, but perhaps Sinclair will 'keep anyway. I'm pretty sure McCullum and Papps are the first 2 options, so they should probably free up a spot for another batsman or bowler to play.

I think Sinclair will open with How, & Hopkins will bat in te normal 'keeper's position in the lower order (unless he opens in the Shield??)..........

my basis for this is that Sinclair opened in the SOO game and as such is the most recent 'opener' ........other options would be Vincent (but I doubt they want to start in on that game again, but if they do it would be a good indication they are seriously considering him for the back-up role in the Touring party), and lastly possibly Taylor.........

Vincent also provides another 'keeping option, but IMO they already have this covered with McCullum, Hart & Papps.......

Walker was injured for the last 'Test' so he still may be unavailable..........

good to see Mason in the squad & I hope he gets to start in the 1st match to put the Test behind him...........

for mind Mills & Marshall / Vincent to sit out the 1st 'ODI'...........

one concern - if Astle is not fit enough for this squad, should he be considered for the Tour?????

any news re injuries etc from the 2nd innings??????????

I see that Franklin, Mills & Marshall did the majority of the bowling!!!!
Marshall - 10 4 12 1 !!!! - does he still bowl medium pace & are they looking to develop his bowling as another slow bowling option - his domestic stats are nothing?????

:O

Sri Lanka have sent over another 10 players for the ODI series.

4 of them played in the 3rd test, and it was their heaviest defeat so far on tour...

Ian Daniel, clearly their best batsman, is one of those who it seems have already gone home to join this training squad for the tour of Zimbabwe. In other words, if Shane Bond takes 5/20 this Saturday, the media will be seriously jumping the gun if they claim he's back and better than ever.

Anzac - I've never seen the Marshall boys bowl anything other than mediums.

I still don't really get why Hopkins deserves to play. Perhaps they want to give the likes of Shane Bond a specialist gloveman just to feel comfortable.

they've already come to the conclusion that Hart is not an international Limited Overs 'keeper & perhaps have decided upon Hopkins as the 3rd (??) specialist behind McCullum & Papps........

I'd have thought that if they are going to contemplate using Sinclair or Vincent as cover then this would have been an opportunity to get some glovework b4 the Tour - just in case........

as you say it would have then freed up another batting spot to look at someone else - Stewart perhaps?????????

it will be interesting to see if they use Marshall as a bowling option during the 'A' ODIs - if so then perhaps they are looking to develop him as a bowling option to cover the loss of Astle & Harris.......perhaps they may even bowl How for the same reasons........

Why is Papps the second best one day keeper in the country he is no better a keeper than Vincent or Sinclair.

Hopkins for mine is the second best one day keeper in the country he is a very underrated player.

Are you saying underrated in terms of batting or glovework?

A domestic career average of 21 may not be enough for the NZ selectors to play a specialist if they were without McCullum.

Papps is currently my reserve ODI 'keeper because he's in the current side, has kept since childhood, and kept at f/c level in January. Maybe you're right though - maybe if McCullum got injured they would want to play Hopkins.

Hopkins is old and is not a long term option at all. He is overrated by one member on this forum, Southern Man.

Papps should be the reserve keeper to England.

Anzac, I know you don't get to see many games, but Marshall and How are not at all good bowling options even if it is a 6th one.

I agree with Kent, why would they go with Hopkins? Reece Young is rated by Adam Paroae as the next best gloveman after McCullum. Interesting that Chris Nevin seems to be out of the selectors book totally.

How have i overrated him thats the first time i have ever posted about Hopkins, Im not saying he should tour with the back caps or anything like that.
Why does everybody think that Papps is such a great keeper all of a sudden?

Mingster

State Regular
Erm...no did say Papps was a great keeper. We said he would provide adequate backup to McCullum.

Hopkins is Canterbury reject, because he couldn't get any starts in the State Shield because Michael Papps was the preferred keeper.
