What in god's name is Matt Bell doing there? in 12 innings he's averaged 33.

I know McIntosh has been disappointing, but How hasn't exactly been in great form either & he's been included...I really think they should have taken a punt on McIntosh to see how he goes with the step up.

Other than that, yeah I agree with that team...the only concern for me will be how Vincent goes after 2 months out with injury.

Bruce Martin the forgotten man? he hasn't even played test cricket yet so not many people will even know what he's capable of.

I seriously doubt he's been forgotten by the selectors, it's just that for awhile either the pitches weren't good enough for spin or Vettori made the N.D team ahead of him.

I think Franklin has improved alot with the bat, he's got a decent average of 35 this season with the bat and has taken 29 wickets at an average of 22.82...thats superb so he justifiably gets a call-up.

He was 12th man when Australia last toured here.

One player who should be annoyed with himself mainly is Jesse Ryder.

Really, if all went to plan this season..he should have been in the 'A' lineup but due to poor behaviour & loss of form he's missed out.

I think it's a fair call to only have Taylor in the OD team.

About 3 or 4 times this year in the State Championship he's blazed his way to 50 & then gotten out...he needs to learn how to build an innings.

Gareth Hopkins is the one that interests me, and I suddenly realised that Jeff Wilson hasn't been included in the 'A' team & neither in the OD players to train for the 3 other matches.

Yes, why wasn't Wilson in the squad? Probably fitness.

I reckon Franklin will be the bolter for the England squad.

Tim

It has to be fitness or a personal decision by Wilson....surely the selectors didn't overlook him otherwise.

Yeah I hadn't realised how well James Franklin had been playing this season...I remember for the NZ U19's he used to be an opening bowler & #3 or #4 batsman..so he's always been recognised as a potential all-rounder.
The advantage with Franklin is that he bowls left arm & no doubt he's matured since he last played in 2002 for NZ.

What a **** team :!( :!( :!(
How the hell did Gaffney miss out he was one of the best batsmen in the comp.
Wilson was fully fit.

Franklin's OD record for Wellington is poor, but it's his FC stats which are very good & I'd perhaps like to see him at least travel to England for the test series alone.

Come on SM, it's really only Matt Bell that is the problem...the rest of them were pretty much agreed upon by most people debating who should be in the 'A' team on this forum.

Chris Gaffaney is probably one of the most talented batsmen i've seen to come out of NZ domestic cricket, yet he has underachieved so badly over the years.

He has a fantastic ability to rip a bowling lineup to shreds on any given day but they appear to come few & far between...he must have been close to NZ 'A' selection though.

I thought they would of put him in the Hamish Marshall bracket alot of natural talent but not the numbers to back it up.
But Gaffney does have good first class stats.

Tim

Cricketer Of The Year
The 7 centuries & 20 half centuries is good, but the average of 33 suggests he's had a lot of lean times in between.

He's still only 28 or 29 I think so he's got a number of years left, like i've said with a few other players it might be worth putting him up against decent opposition on test & ODI like pitches to see if he can show his true potential.

Come on SM.

You really think Gaffaney will play for NZ ever?

NO.

If he was to be selected, he would be the oldest out of that bunch of batsmen.

If I take your stance, I would whinge as well, "but oooooohhhh azza barnes did not get selected. i am very angry now."

Tim

Cricketer Of The Year
I disagree....Hart & Bell would be the same age as Gaffaney if not older. And besides i've seen Gaffaney bat a number of times..I know how he bats & he's absolutely brilliant at his best.

Well I just checked and Bell is 27, so he's a couple of years younger...but I don't think age should be a problem if you score runs in this series.

Gaffney 8 12 1 496 160 45.09 1 3 8 - OTAGO
Barnes 8 12 1 456 134* 41.45 2 - 7 - AUCK

Gaffney has Banres beat in stats.

Gaffney is also a different type of player he is an opener/no three barnes is a five or six.

I never compared between those two though.

Just get over it. Gaffaney isn't in the team. This is really going to make a huge difference in the outcome of the series.
