Why Gilchrist?. Sangakkara is the obvious choice.
Gilchrist's average is just two less than Sangakkara BUT Gilchrist has a strike rate of 80, he sets the world alight with his batting and so is more memorable when thinking of a great wicketkeeper batsman.

More on current form, Sanga is the form player.

Nah, I know a heap more than all my mates and I'd be an expert compared to them but some of the people here are brilliant when it comes to cricket and alot of the stuff I know I probably would have learnt from them tbh.
Gelman, modesty does not become you. Admit it, you put Benaud to shame.

We're not talking about past performances. Sangakkara in the last year in test cricket has been much better than Gilchrist.

But people (including me) miss the form in the bright shining light of an Ashes whitewash (good metaphor).

Norwood's on Fire
There is a severe lack of talent in the world if a guy who has played like three innings is the second best opener in the world.

I'd go with:

  1. Hayden
  2. Hussey
  3. Ponting
  4. Dravid
  5. Pieterson
  6. Kallis
  7. Gilchrist
  8. Flintoff
  9. Clark
  10. Muralitharan
  11. Ntini

I'd throw Asif in there, but I am not sure what his status is atm. My side bats very very well down to eight, which is important but still has three great fast bowlers (Clark, Ntini, Flintoff), one very good fast bowler (Kallis) and a very good spinner (Murali).
Yet you'd open with somebody who hardly ever opens in Tests? Indeed has Hussey ever opened?

Yet, (I think) Sanga did not keep for his own team in the last couple Test matches.....so you have to pretty much pick up as a specialist bat.
Code:
season 2006/07 2 4 2 268 156* 100* 8 134.00 2 0 0
                       5 6 1 229 102* 64 62 45.80 1 2 2
Maybe he has been forgotten with just one (low profile, ie Not Ashes) series in the past season.

Nah, I reckon that he is the best keeper of spin on the international circuit at the moment, keeping to Murali has made sure of that.

Norwood's on Fire
Nope, but he is an opener by trade.
Hmm Flintoff is a batsman who bowls by trade, would you pick hhim as a specialist batsman?

(tenuous argument but I don't have much time to make this post. Nonetheless, my point is this: being something by trade doesn't mean you should do it in a World test XI, you should have to prove you can play that position)
