The Wheel is Forever
KL Rahul said:
"He [Kohli] was confused, he said it will not look too nice, not to take the single, it's still a World Cup, and it's still a big stage. 'I don't want to look like I am just trying to get the milestone'," Rahul told Star Sports. "But I said, I mean it is not won but still I think we'll win quite easily, so if you can get to the milestone why not, you must try. And he did that in the end. I wasn't going to run the singles anyway."
Am I the asshole? I think I’m the asshole. It’s the American in me I’m sure.

I don't see where the issue is. India and Kohli scored 32 runs in the last 3.3 overs with Kohli dealing in sixes and fours to compensate for the lost refused singles. Surely that improves the overall NRR and not reduce it.

Haha. May I ask how old you are? I ask it not as an insult but as appreciation. We need people, not like me, on this forums that are not scarred by the 90s, and always expecting mediocrity.

it’s good that the next generation expect greatness. Unfortunately, it’s too late for me.
Will turn 25 next month

This is such a good post . I can totally relate to it . When we were no.1 Test side in early 2011 and Won 2011 WC , I thought we may start our dominance in cricket . However after 0-8 loss in Eng / Aus ,that thought quickly vanished.

Now I believe Indian cricket Team = England Football Team . Both aren’t destined to greatness despite unlimited fan hype and money . Both teams will have some great players but won’t have great Team .

While not upto the Aus and WI teams, the current team is great though. Has been in top 3 rankings across formats for past 10 years, unbeatable at home and quite competent away. It is the greatest Indian team to assemble for sure.

It’s just way harder for a team to dominate this era a lot of teams have caught up in a lot of areas, I don’t see it happening again anytime soon. For tests it’s harder to beat any of the top sides at their home. For the shorter formats the t20s feel like lottery’s half the time and it’s tough to win 2 world cups in a row. For odis most countries won’t have a consistent side for World Cup cycles these days cause the schedule is longer plus all the franchise cricket around.

Honestly, it just feels a bit slightly off. I'm definitely not in the camp that thinks it's a big deal, but I like my sports people to be 100% team first. You can't turn down singles and claim that you're that. Yes, India scored quickly but any time there is a single and you don't take it, with two equally capable batsmen at the crease, you can't claim that is focused on the main goal which is NRR.

Again, not a big issue, but I wouldn't like to see one of my senior players do it.

If Rahul was so keen on Kohli trying for a hundred, he should have told kohli earlier when kohli was on 70* and India still needed 45 runs.

Why wait till Kohli was on 74* and both India and him needing 26 runs. At least the hitting would have started sooner and both could have rotated the strike too. Strange decision to decide very late to go for the hundred.

I feel Kohli in his early 70s looked to have settled for an unbeaten chase, he was dealing in singles mostly and then it all changed with 26 required.

Not a great issue either, but I doubt any other team would've done it, and I'm not sure India would've done it for any other player. Would Kohli turn down runs for Rahul?

Kohli once turned down runs so that Padikkal could get his 100 in the ipl but then again that was the ipl

Turning down runs until he found a six ball increased the net run rate relative to taking signals. What are you people on about?

Fair points I reckon. There's no doubt Kohli runs on ego, and maybe this helps him after the huge ton drought through COVID. I dunno, again I didn't like it much, but I don't think it has any major downside for India. Maybe it even helps just a very little, in terms of Kohli's ego and the hype of a nation.

Well, Shami is nowhere near as good as Starc for one.

He is a good bowler, but his stats (mostly the average) flatter him imo, had the occasional tendency to to get smashed in the important part of the game and then pick some cheap wickets at the end - this is somewhat shown in his economy rate as well.

All this is not to say that he is a bad bowler in any way, he'd be our first choice bowler for 85-90% of our ODI history (i.e. before Bumrah came along), but he really didn't show any particular gap to Siraj before the cup started. He would also easily get above Thakur as a bowler, but the setup believes they need someone capable of some batting there. Shami used to be okayish with the bat early career but for the last few years he has been little more than a meme. Of course, this assumes that Thakur has some ability with the bat which is an open question.
8/60 for Shami since this post and 2/176 for Starc.

Perhaps I had a point.
