I think delhi has the best balanced team. Great batting in Sehwag, de villiers, Malik and gambhir, quality pace attack in mcgrath, asif and maharoof and a good spinner in vetori.

Chennai and punjab are good too. But punjab is dumb to have yuvraj as captain over jayawardene. Surely Jayawardene is a better captain by far.

Interesting game, McCullum was magnificent needs to transform that temperament into his test match game & he can very well & become NZ's Gilchrist.

I reckon i might like this tournament after all. Only change i would mae in future tournaments is the restriction of only 4 overseas players per game TBH even though it does give some of the younger players some exposure. If the IPL wants to get that real league like feel to it like the BPL they should pick as much International players as possible (with Twenty20 pedigee of course) & mix them with the Indian national players, but if a young player is capable then pick him, don't pick him just to make up numbers.
Thats not going to be necessary. International match schedules mean that not all International players will be available. In the first match alone Chris Gayle, Anil Kumble, Dale Steyn, Salman Butt and Misbah-ul-Haq were not able to play.

WoW .... what an innings by McCullum .... He showed what 20T is all about and that why players like him are so useful in such format

For B'lore, the talk of having substance and superiority of technique proved crap .... hopefully, this will serve as a wake up call for them

Of the 8 players you mention 6 are foreign. They can only play 4 so balance is key and it doesnt matter how good players are that are left out.

IMO, they should really increase the # of internationals who can play from four to five. Maybe - just maybe - six. I don't want this to be fully international. Perhaps this is selfish, but I do want this to benefit the Indian players in some way.

Here's a really quick wrap of today's match

The IPL started off with a bang, with a spectacular (yet short) opening ceremony, and then the McCullum show. He smashed everything and everyone- pace, spin, line and length- good balls or otherwise- all around the park. With as many as 14 sixes, he set new standards as a T20 batsman, crossing the massive 150 and staying unbeaten, carrying his bat through. The rest of the batsmen on show had little to do, and some of them didn't even get a bat. Laxmiratan Shukla, for instance, had to make his presence felt as a bowler, and we wonder what would Kartik have to do. The standout bowler was Ishant Sharma, though Dinda also had a good match and Ganguly got more than a little with the ball.

The Royal Challengers didn't get their bowling right at all. Except Praveen Kumar and Cameron White, the bowling was largely less than average, or dreadful, and even they had to face a rampaging McCullum. The rest of the bowlers were weak- Zaheer was six-hittable, Noffke pedestrian, Kallis helpless, and Joshi only looked better because he was unfancied. The fielding left a lot to be desired. The inept bowling put their team far from victory, as their batting simply didn't have the firepower to chase down a huge score, folding up quickly- gifting away as many as five wickets. Except Kumar again, the batting was a thorough mess, and the lack of attack power was a clear factor. The superior Kolkata fielding made it a lot tougher.

Vijay Mallya has done a good thing by banking on experience with race-winner Fisichella in his F1 team. But this is cricket, not Formula 1. Mere track records don't help keep a team afloat if they can't rip through the tracks when others can.

Ishant had good control over that one which straightens. If he could earn even more control over that delivery, little is stopping him from unfathomable heights.

Looking at the Delhi squad here - who do you think they should play tomorrow?
Vettori at #3? Promotion for Maharoof? Rajat Bhatia getting a game? I'd like to see
  • Batsmen- Sehwag, Gambhir, Manhas, Manoj Tewary, Chamara Silva
  • Wicketkeeper- Dinesh Karthik
  • Bowling all-rounders- Maharoof (RMF), Vettori (SLA)
  • Bowlers- Mishra (LBG), Sangwan (LMF), McGrath (Guess?)

Whom would you have manning the Chennai bowling? I'd say-
  • Tyagi - RM
  • Oram - RM
  • Joginder - RM
  • Muralitharan - OB
  • Ashwin - OB/Vidyut - SLA
That last option is a toss-up between the better bowler and a bowler of a different style (and also a better batsman). Looks tough for them, though. Doesn't help when one of their premier bowlers is Makhaya Ntini.

Haha, the official IPL site still has the random bits of Latin that are there when you start from a template in places... slick indeed.

Tyagi is injured IIRC.

Yeah I am sure those in charge don't really understand this format. This is a big call but I would rather Ross Taylor in my team than Dravid by a long way. I wouldn't be surprised to see Tendulkar fail miserably in this tournament either.
Not a big call at all. Dravid's game simply isn't made for Twenty20. He shouldn't make the XI of any side in the IPL.

The coverage is a bit rubbish online, isn't it? There's no photos at all... of the ceremony or of the match. By now you'd normally have some up on the BBC or on cricinfo.
Blame the IPL themselves, for thinking their tournament is more important than it really is:

Global news and photograph agencies will carry out their threat to boycott coverage of the Indian Premier League because of the restrictions on the distribution of photographs. Agencies are prohibited from providing photographs of the Twenty20 tournament to cricket-specific websites.

The News Media Coalition (NMC), the umbrella body that comprises global news and photograph agencies Reuters, Associated Press, Agence France-Presse (AFP) and Getty Images, called the restrictions "discriminatory".

"It is discriminatory for the accreditation terms to prohibit international news agencies from being able to serve a specific group of users, such as cricket websites," the NMC said in a statement. "The interests of the IPL are protected by the fact that its accreditation terms limit news content generated by the news agencies to be used for editorial purposes only. The NMC calls upon the IPL to remove remaining obstacles in the way of full editorial coverage of the tournament."

McCullum should roll his arm over, see if some of the magic transfers. What can go wrong from here?
McCullum bowling isn't that pretty a sight. He's a wrong-footer, although he's accurate enough.

Managed to catch a replay, but at the back end of McCullum's massacre.

This is such a big boys' bully the little guys game.

If your big signings don't fire for you, you're stuffed because a lot of other players are not really up to international standard. Dravid and Jaffer - good god, should they really be in 20 20 when they don't even play ODIs anymore?

I only hope the Black Caps playing (bar Flem) don't end up becoming flat track bullies by the time they reach English green wickets for the tests.

GGG

State Captain
It wasn't a flat track though, it was swinging. Even Ganguly said after the game something like "I have never seen such hitting on this sort of wicket, I have seen some good hitting on flat tracks but this had a bit in it all the time"

I would say this was the best limited overs innings I've ever seen live. The ball was doing something for everyone else, it looked like. McCullum just was better than everyone.
