Nah... I think this is a pragmatic call. He may have figured out his fitness was not upto playing all games and they have Conway. So makes sense IMO. He is still gonna pseudo-lead the side anyways.

He's an experienced player, but captaining as well as being a key batsman and bowler for us is a pretty big responsibility especially for a rook captain.

I'm confident MS and Flem will not leave him hanging but it does seem a lot imo.

Booo I have a 4 day weekend starting today but Rajasthan's first game isn't until Tuesday.

Taking a crack at figuring out what their first XI will look like:

Padikkal | Butler | Jaiswal | Samson (+) (*) | Hetmyer/van der Dussen | Mitchell/Neesham | Parag | Ashwin | Boult | Chahal | Krishna/Saini

Ashwin/Chahal the spin attack and the backbone of our bowling really. Ashwin can bowl in the powerplay, along with Boult and whichever of Krishna/Saini get picked. Parag and Neesham/Mitchell the allrounders. So that's 6 bowlers and batting till 7 with Ashwin doing his thing at 8. I'd rather have Padikkal opening with Butler to take advantage of the powerplay, with Jaiswal the anchor at 3. Decent middle order too.

Stronger than most RR sides we've seen in the past, but not quite championship material I feel. Ashwin isn't much of a T20 batter, so that tail is pretty long, and the 5th/6th bowling options aren't great either. But the top 4 is solid and the main 4 bowlers are good too.

K. C. Cariappa the reserve spinner is decent, and there is the option of playing both Saini and Krishna, leaving out Boult to play both of Mitchell and Neesham. That puts either Parag or Jaiswal on the bench. Strengthens the batting without losing too much in the bowling. Alternatively, play NCN for Boult, therefore lengthening the tail a bit.

Big questions about Hetmeyer's form coming into this tournament, so I think Rassie starts. Karun Nair a good backup option to have, but he would have top bat at 3 or 4 as an anchor. Would like to have more explosive options for the middle order, a lot relying on Butler/Samson/Parag/Hety having good seasons.

The local Indian uncapped options are all a bit unproven. I hope the RR scouts have seen something in them, because I don't feel comfortable picking any of them unless there are major injury concerns.
