Got pretty bored while trying to watch the Punjab v Rajasthan game. I had to switch off the tv after 30 minutes of watching it. This tournament is already reaching a saturation point for me. I can watch the games in which the top teams play but not much else. I certainly can't watch every game. Will limit my watching to get maximum pleasure by watching more of the contests between the top 4 teams (Mumbai, Delhi, Deccan, Chennai) and some of the KKR games.

Yeah, it's already getting a bit much. Just too many fixtures in too short a time. Unless it's a Bangalore game or there's an Australian I want to watch like Hayden or Quiney I'm not really finding it that interesting. Same thing happened last year but it was much further in to the tourney.

Thats the weekend crowd. On Thursday and Friday the stands were half empty.

Back foot, lofted straight drive? A good shot, if you can play it.
Fair enough. I would have said he is a right handed batsman playing a backfoot off drive but thats okay.

Do you have any doubt about it being a drive and the fellow being a right hander ?

I guess not. Because in the logo ....

  1. You can see the handle top sticking out from the top hand and the fingers are turned towards the photgrapher. This is only possible of the top hand is the left hand of the player hence he is right handed.
  2. The swish of the blade as shown by the light blue arc goes from the just under the hip level on the batsman's right side to over his left shoulder. This is only possible if he was right handed and playing a shot on the off side.

Now.

IPL went with this logo to an Amsterdam firm and asked them to make a ridiculously expensive trophy made of gold and studded with hundreds of diamonds and eight rubies to show the cities the teams come from. The batsman on the logo is made from solid gold but the Dutch company had no clue about the game and could not tell which hand was which. The end result is a ridiculous looking statuette of a player where the bottom hand just inches before the blade becomes the top hand and vice versa.

Have a look.

No one has bothered that it looks ridiculous. I suppose someone must have noticed. Ms Gavaskar, Shastri and the other foreign commentators go crazy talking of how magnificent the trophy is (it is a horrendous looking specimen even without the problem with the batsman's hands but thats my personal opinion so not relevant) and no one has the guts to tell Mr Lalit Modi to get the damn thing rectified form the company in Netherlands who must have charged a fortune for it anyway.

This is what happens to easy money. No one cares how badly it is spent.

thats means they where half full rite...didnt thought even that would be possible
I suppose so although they are not letting out the figures.

I have a sneaking feeling IPL is going to lose money again this year and the team owner's are going to begin to get jittery by the end of this season.

The Indian community in South Africa is coming out in support. The grounds could as well be in India from the make up of the crowds.

The locals are not that many.

The other day one of the commentary team was asking amongst the crowd, "Which team do you think will win today?" and a white lady relied "I dont know which teams are playing today". The match was going on at that time !!

People who come just for a good time, for the carnival, for an evening out are not going to make many repeat visits. There are going to be other circuses in town and children dont even go to the circus every day.

In the last IPL, my big 120" screen was brand new so we had friends coming over wanting to watch the matches and have beer and enjoy. We aren't having many this time. Those who do come want to play pool after some time. :)

Warnie's mob is struggling, it lacks an international classy frontline pace bowler and the batting is weak.

The IPL for BCCI was a big success last time and the same this time also with the new 8300 crore deal with sony..only thing to know is willl sony be able to recover the money and as for teams they where reporting that other than RCB most of them should be okay

What is the under-22 player rule in the IPL playing XI? Is there any other rule (catchment area?) apart from four foreign players and the under 22 player rule?

Some players are not giving value for money. So far Smith is giving the least.

Who's not paisa vasool?

April 27, 2009

Shane Warne was pretty blunt when he stated that the Rajasthan Royals' top order batsmen have to fire. One guesses that he was referring to Graeme Smith although Swapnil Asnodkar too is discovering that it is not easy to tee off on South African pitches.

Here is a list of cricketers who are not offering value for money so far in the second season of the Indian Premier League We must note, however, that a couple of good knocks or good spells can quickly change numbers. It turns out that South African captain Smith is indeed currently the least paisa vasool.

It is no coincidence that most of the names come from teams that have not started well: Bangalore Royal Challengers (BRC), Rajasthan Royals (RR), Kolkata Knight Riders [Images] (KKR) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

Who are the best batsmen so far in IPL 2?

Although IPL's orange cap is awarded to the batsman scoring the largest number of runs, it really makes more sense to look at a batsman who has scored the largest number of runs and at the highest strike rate.

The table below lists the top batsmen. Matthew Hayden tops the list based on this dual criterion.

Who are the best bowlers so far in IPL2?

IPL's purple cap, awarded to the bowler who takes the largest number of wickets, too should really be given to the bowler with most wickets and lowest economy rate.

It turns out that Deccan Chargers pacer RP Singh still tops the list based on this dual criterion.

Finally, another curious facet of IPL second season so far has been that teams have generally chosen to play with the same playing eleven in most of the matches -- although they have shuffled the odd foreign player.

Hence, there are a large number of expensive passengers that all teams are carrying. Perhaps that is why they are choosing to offload a few excess players. But why must these always be Indian players?

Based on the detailed IPL1 analysis carried out by Purnendu Maji in 2008. The paisa vasool index uses a model developed by M J Manohar Rao and Rajeeva L Karandikar.

Hayden is seriously good at T20 cricket. I know I said Yusuf Pathan is made for this format, but the difference in Hayden is his general playing style, whilst obviously trasnferaable to all formats (clearly great records in Tests and ODIs), his ability to bully the bowlers on predictable tracks is exacerbated even further.

Chennai will be thanking their stars that they have him all tournament this year. They would have won the tournament last year had he not left due to intl duties.

He should be picked for Australia in the T20. If SA pick guys like Smith and Kallis who obviously can't perform in this format, surely it would be folly for oz to overlook a clearly superior performer.
