***Official*** IPL 2009

You can cut out the abuse, thanks.

In the end, he's really only being "cut" for another Indian player though, isn't he? Although I guess they could be dropping Kaif for an international batsman, and thus an international bowler will have to make way for an Indian bowler.

How many of the sides didn't play the maximum amount of internationals last year?
Ok. The reference to "race card" was as stupid as my retort.

We still don't know whether he was cut for an Indian player or Overseas player. I know there can only be a maximum of 4 International players per XI. However considering they can have more than that number of Internationals in the squad, which would provide ample buffer for foreign players on International duty, I guess it makes pure business sense to drop him.

I am not complaining. Kaif was ridiculously poor performer in the last year's IPL and he deserved to be dropped. The plan makes sense because it is not conducted in India, and saves hugely on boarding and travelling costs.

I dont doubt you, but do you have a link to the details of the contract?

Im interested in reading it.
Nah, sorry, I don't. I do remember the commentators mention that Gibbs was being paid for sitting on his ass in the early stages of last years event before Symonds left midway.

He still gets paid because his contract states that he should, irrespective of whether he stays in SA or is back in India. His price tag doesn't dictate how good a player he is or isn't. So if they're not going to play him at all, and he gets paid anyway, might as well save money on boarding and travelling by sending him back home.
Adding to this, the price tag should in no way be the primary consideration for determining whether a player should be in the XI or not. Deccan Charges made that mistake by persisting with Gibbs and Afridi for longer that they should have in the last IPL. Pricing is a thing which should have been taken care of initially while bidding. Once done. it is a sunk cost, and the best thing the franchises can do is to limit additional costs with that asset. Considering many lower paid players have done better than Kaif, it makes perfect sense to send him back and concentrate on those low value assets, and make good with them the sunk costs.

No brainer really.

That contrasts with the information I have read. Thats why Im interested to read the source.

Ill happily change my opinion if concrete evidence can be produced.

As it stands, I cant see Kaif (and others) getting paid their full salary when not being in the country. As Ive read, not playing = 25% of salary.

Whatever it takes!!!

The payment is pro-rata for every game the player was AVAILABLE for... If he was injured or something, it is different but if he is available and was not picked, then he would still be paid the money he would have received had he played...

Not sure if it applies to Indian players' contracts too, though.. I am almost sure that it is the case for international players, however.

Just realised that Kolkatta are going to have the most insane 20-20 opening partnership imaginable.

Chris Gayle and Brendon McCullum opened together in one warm up match so far and made 145 in 12 overs :-O

Can't wait to see those guys opening together.

Where can you get scorecards for the warm up games? Who were the opposition?

I wonder whether Polly would have retired from the IPL as well had he known that this year's would have been on his home turf.

I forgot about Kings XI having Katich. He could be pretty good for them, and they've got him the whole competition.

Yeah, his got a good chance of playing in most of their matches.

Lee is likely to miss most of the IPL, Jayawardene's form in limited overs cricket in recent months has been deplorable, Bopara is only over for a few weeks and Burt ****ley hasn't even played a 20/20 game. Sangakkara and Pomersbach would be the two other givens, I would have thought.

Who?

For an event that originally was based on seeing all the stars together, there are a lot of no-name Aussies playing that wouldnt get a gig in CC.

I thought the break after 10 overs was greed overkill too, but they've clarified that this means matches will now last 3 and a quarter hours now, with a $20,000 fine on the captain for a first time offence if they're slow. The games last season regularly stretched to 3 and a half hours with negligible $100 fines.
