Whatever it takes!!!
He’s still fine as a wicket-keeper, why not just keep him down at number 9 lol
Coz they did not pick a side for it. I guess they wanted to repeat the 2023 side which was built on batting partnerships.

Conway
Rutu

Rahane
Dube

Rayudu
Moeen

Jaddu
MSD

Chahar
Theekshana
Deshpande
Pathirana

This was the make up of the side that won them the trophy and the year where they were comfortably the best team on show. So I assume in the auction, they picked up Noor to replace Theekshana and Khaleel to replace Deshpande but then for some reason they got Ashwin to replace Chahar. This now means you expect Ashwin to bowl in the PP as otherwise, the balance is gone. CSK already has Jaddu, Pathirana who cannot bowl in the powerplay and they replaced Chahar and Theekshana who both did bowl in the PP with Noor and Ashwin, and Noor doesn't bowl in the PP. They also got in Sam Curran for Moeen Ali which is fine coz Sam can bowl in the PP but they did not give him many games to get himself in. They also got 3D/Hooda to play the Rayudu role and Tripathi to play the Rahane role, and yet for some reason they insist they want Rutu to bat at 3 which makes no sense. Even now, if they just play the side closest to this template they may yet find it easier to make more runs.

Conway

Sam Curran

Jaddu

Ashwin
Pathirana
Noor
Khaleel

But the make up of this side demands Ashwin or Pathirana to bowl in the PP and they have to trust Sam Curran to somehow deliver 2 overs in the PP as well. Or, they can simply play Kambhoj for Mukesh and still be a better side than what they put out yesterday. The other conundrum is the fact that Rutu seems very reluctant or bad in using spin and they built a spin heavy side for some reason. They could have got Chahar and Shardul for the money they spent on Ashwin. If they did do that, the balance would be so much better and more towards what Rutu seems comfortable with. Or, they should have just made MSD captain again.

All said and done though, they lost coz of the catches they put down in 3 of the 4 games. They take the simple catches that changed those games, they probably win all 3 or at least 2 of the 3. Its all very well to keep crying how they have not chased 180 in 5 seasons but they still won 2 of those seasons. Their success was built on a bowling side that can keep teams under par and then batting well, or batting first and putting par scores and then defending it. Fielding is definitely the biggest issue and it seems to be a confidence thing. Someone like Rachin and Overton dropping sitters is just not a regular thing.

Or give the gloves to Conway and pick a specialist bat instead? He's just a waste of a selection. Most teams have their keeper batting in the Top 5 (I know he did yesterday but that isn't the norm).

Dhoni was fine yesterday and he's generally fine as a death over slogger. The issue is Jadeja+Ashwin aren't bowling or batting particularly well and the top order are all anchors. Dhoni either has to bat early vs spin where he's been useless for ages, or try to slog 55(14), which he's never going to do, because the middle order have gone too slow.

Conway chewed up a 3rd of the balls yesterday going at 7/8's when the RR was 11's and went at ~6.5 in the PP. Dubey went at 155 and didn't capitalise at the death. CSK just aren't leveraging there batting depth because Jadeja and dhoni both can't walk in before over ~15/16. Ashwin up the order could work? He's been good in that floating spin bosher role for Rajastan before. They set up for batting depth and spin choke, and in practice 2 of there 3 spinners have been useless and there falling 15 runs short with Ashwin not bowling. Dhoni isn't causing this.

You also missed them dropping catches most of CWers would take, almost every game. I think its a given CSK would have won had Hetmeyer been taken by Overton in the RR game, or if Mukhesh had taken the easiest catch possible at long off to dismiss Arya off Ashwin yesterday in the PBKS game. I also think CSK would have beaten RCB had Hooda taken a catch people would take 999/1000 times to dismiss Patidar for 6.

They have tried to fix things that wasn't broken (Conway-Gaikwad opening, the middle order with Tripathi-Dube-3D-Curran) and Ashwin bowling in the PP. But you are right. They can try Ashwin up the order and see if he can go in and slog the spinners or at least pinch hit in the PP.

I wonder if Curran is finished. Got a couple of games, no runs or wickets and Overton replaced him before Overton was dropped. Curran hoping to be picked for England is not going to have a chance of show off his skills. Will have to wait till he is T20 captain at Surrey.

Although, let's be honest, I'll be amazed if Archer plays any red ball cricket this Summer (or ever).
I can see him being picked for the Ashes tour, start one of the tests and break down after not very long and that will be it.......

"Theekshana, even though he took a couple of wickets [2 for 54], didn't look like [he was] putting any pressure. He and Tushar [2 for 53] went for 50-plus, that cost them more than 100 runs in those eight overs."

Ganguly for Pune when he did.

Also Gambhir for Delhi when he did. And I guess Shreyas Iyer for Delhi too in the same year. Sanju Samson for RR at some point too, maybe?

Shreyas had already made his debut. Sanju too. How would Gambhir or Ganguly been uncapped though?
