India starts off the first 15-20 overs at 4.5 runs an over. In that phase batsmen look like test cricketers trying to build a good total without losing wickets in an odi. They have to start at 7+ per over and in the middle overs reach maybe 8 per over and end up close to 400 scores if they need to beat this strong English odi side.

Agree that we need to bat quicker during powerplays and the first 20. We can’t rely on Krunal/Pant/Pandya type of finishes to bail us out all the time.

That said it wasn’t the batting that lost us the game.

Also hoping they would promote Pant to no 4 take on Spinners. Slog sweep works like a charm against leg spinners. Mooen will be butchered anyway by Pant. England LOI players play slog sweep really well & don't let our spinners settle. Kohli keeps tucking along 1's n 2's & KL is on a mission to just stat pad. Unless Kohli starts sweeping he will face problems against spinners. Last IPl kinda exposed him. How I wish we had someone like Kishan at the top. Eng would be toast then.

one quick question from newbie to cricket - commentators keep on praising batting lineup of England - heavy hitters, immense power,... - but when i look at India (and bear in mind, i started watching cricket on last WC) , India batting line up looks to me as strong as theirs, even better if I see guys on bench, so whats deal with that? why so much praise for Eng?

I can see the appeal of Kishan in T20s. He's had some success at MI although it's overstated. But not sure that is enough to slot him ahead of Shaw in ODI opening slot. One averages 60 with a SR of 125 in List A, and the other has 36 and 92 in contrast.

Lots of talk about Shaw which is fine as dude has great potential, but what about Kishan? Don't we need a left hander at the top who is supposed to be a dasher? I think Kishan should edge Shaw atm.

Dude is in great form agree but I feel IPl performance holds more weight than VHT. Let's see who lights up IPl this year Kishan Vs Shaw. Kishan was the star last time. Never seen a Indian hit 30 sixes in an IPl & manhandling express pace of Nortje Rabada. Shaw also needs a good IPl to convince selectors he's ready. Talent wise he is indeed better than Gill Kishan Paddikal no doubt.
