*Official* India Tour of England 2018

But Root is bloody awful at 3, why hinder our best bat just because the other lad is better down the order. Anyway Moeen bats at 3 for his county, and I think it's fair giving him a chance there. If he fails he fails and so what?
Well, I did not know that. Was under the impression Root had a good record at 3 that got better at 4. Still would say Root's better equipped to deal with the 3 spot but I understand the reasoning behind having him at 4.

Roy is the sort of pick that Smith is going for. Thing is it continually being implied that Jennings is a lock for Sri Lanka "because he can play spin" It's not true. He's just marginally less **** at it than facing fast bowling. Today's dismissal was terrible.

Statistically his best position is at 5 when he plundered runs at an average for 73.12, but obviously him batting at 5 isn't really an option with how bad our batting is. Also I do think he could work batting at 3 IF he wasn't the captain, I think the added pressure of being captain and the obvious psycholgical thing going on with him makes it too much. I still think we'd be stupid battin him at 3 if he wasn't captain though, as I dislike blunting the best bat in the team when the batting isn't so great in the first place.

I just think that it is the only reason he is still in the side. He is terrible, i'd not have recalled him for this series but taking him to Sri Lanka is what looks like happening.

Feel sorry for Cook.

He went from playing in such a strong, well drilled team from 2010-13 to playing under this comical regime.

England has made virtually no progress in test cricket in the last 3 years.

I've only just seen the dismissal on the BBC stream (I am supposed to be working after all...) and I would have been cross with myself for getting out like that and my batting makes Tuffers look like Tendulkar.

If we assume he's not good enough for Test Cricket....., England need two new openers.
I know Hales hasn't played any 1st class cricket recently, but, why not? What about Roy?
Rory Burns should be the first name on the sheet imo, and that talk is all about giving Denly the chance (and current talk is keeping Jennings and having him partner Denly in Sri Lanka).

I don't really have much against having Denly as one of the openers, as Sri Lanka will likely be playing 2 off-spinners so having 1-3 stuffed full of lefties isn't the best idea I don't think, and there aren't really any good options that are right handed.

I believe Roy and Hales won’t be considered. Burns is the best option for England. Number two is harder to work out. It’s not Jennings.

I feel sorry for him. He has had to open with Jennings. That’s bad enough, but Jennings almost ran him out today. Shows where Jennings is mentally. Almost running out a bloke in his farewell test.

Up until this series I had thought Bairstow could open for England in tests.

I have now reconsidered.

Does he have the technique to survive in test cricket? Is he a decent opener? That’s the questions he needs to fulfil. Many great players have a tough series here and there.

I don't think it's a bad idea. England should realise there is no obvious (or traditional) solution. England, as a simple matter of fact, have a gazillion later middle order test level batsmen, but no test level openers. It makes sense to shift the batssmen less likely to fail, up the order. And simply accept it is probably a better option than continuing the quest for a half decent opener.

India have resumed on their merry catch dropping ways. Cook really should cash in big now.
