Excellent innings by Stokes. Bit of a pet peeve of mine that in situations like these, the guy who scores more runs still gets more of the plaudits even though runs are basically worthless and the number of deliveries you play out is more valuable to the team.

Yup. Buttler’s ton is the definition of inconsequential. Its nothing-to-lose style is right in his wheelhouse, it changes nothing with regards the course of the game and means little in the context of the series because the Indians will know he’s unlikely to step it up when the game is actually there to be won.

At least with him keeping if Bairstow is out it’ll give him something to do which might affect a Test.

That is incredibly harsh. He faced some pretty good bowling there, it wasn't entirely pressure-free. He'll be constantly under pressure anyway because of his place in the team.

Also hit a good fifty against Pakistan in a pressured situation so clearly he can do it.
