Whatever it takes!!!
It is a good team but I don't think they will drop Bhajji ever.

And I think DK is better at 5,6 or 7 than at the top.

My XI for the first game would be:

Gautham Gambhir
Rohit Sharma
Subramaniam Badrinath
Yuvraj Singh
MS Dhoni
Dinesh Karthik
Yusuf Pathan
Harbhajan Singh
Praveen Kumar
Ashish Nehra
Pragyan Ojha

Ironic that Nehra is back and I am happy for him. When asked what were the chances of Nehra being back for the 2007 world cup, Vengsarkar, the chief selector replied wryly 'why not select me instead'. I am glad that Nehra's international career is still not over. I will watch every ball of this series on record as the timing doesn't suit me. It is of no importance though.

The problem is that Bhajji does enough to stay in the squad but isn't as exceptional as a front line spinner should be .... he probably has just one 5 wkt haul in 180 odd ODIs and doesn't look to pick up wkts that can turn a game [which explains his decent economy rate]. I wouldn't pick him, if I were picking only one specialist spinner. As a second spinner may be

for me playing a lone specialist spinner would be someone who can pick up a few wkts in the middle overs when the opposition is building a partnership or in the power play when the batsmen are running away with the game

And Karthik could swap positions with Badri if required. I feel that Karthik would do a better job in the power plays, while someone like Badri would be better off playing the middle overs [21 to 35]

At least he had a good FC season and a spectacular WIPA tournament. He bats like a dream and I can't wait to see it. After the last few months we needed some new blood to freshen things up and I think Bravo is the right choice. Adrian Barath will make the test team against India too and they will be in the setup for a very long time, they are that good.

Agree completely about Bhajji... But I just don't think the management will ever see it our way.. :(

And yeah, DK can be good in powerplays but his natural position is in the middle order, as he can slog decently even with fielders out and can also hold the innings together in case of a collapse... Generally though, I would pick the same XI as you, maybe slight changes in the batting order but that is about it.

This series is another exhibition tournament, and should be treated as such. The Indians can use this to plug a few holes in the team, such as making full bowlers out of Yusuf and Nayar, get Ishant back in form, develop a proper backup for Sehwag and Sachin, give Harbhajan and Praveen a chance to work on their batting, bowl out a new-ball bowler when still fresh as against bring him back in the final five, bowl out a bowler for ten straight overs and stick to attacking fields. The Sabina Park pitch appears to be slow, so eight batsmen should be an option.
  • Gambhir
  • Vijay
  • Yuvraj
  • Dhoni (WK)
  • Badrinath
  • Raina/Rohit Sharma
  • Yusuf (OB)
  • Nayar (RM)
  • Harbhajan (OB)
  • RP Singh (LMF)
  • Nehra (LFM)
Alternatively, they can play Praveen and Ojha for two batsmen, or have Ishant in place of one of the left-armers. Raina and Rohit can change places for each match.

I know I'm late to this thread but it's awesome that Badrinath is back in the squad. I hope he gets a fair opportunity this time and establishes himself in the team.

Raina is not in the squad

Playing 8 batsmen is too many, if 6-7 can't do the job then 8 won't. It also lessen the depth in bowling which kills the purpose of playing more batsmen as it makes it easier for the other team to chase/set a total .... Remember you are not picking specialist bowlers to restrict but also provide crucial breakthrough .... Moreover I believe in the theory of strengthening the bowling if the batting is not clicking as it gives batsmen less total to chase/set and thus take the pressure off. If you strengthen the batting when it is not clicking, additional batsman is not going to make a huge impact [esp in the longer format] when others around him are failing. In that case, it's best to select your best 6 batsmen and 5 specialist bowlers

And I would pick at least 3 pacers unless the pitch is an absolute turner as
1. India has part-timers who can spin if required
2. It's usually a risk to play just 2 quicks as if one of them goes for a few in the power plays [20 overs now as you would know] or breaks down we won't have a back up with the ball still fresh .... and then at the death when the ball has the tendency to reverse

Bangladesh not India. Feel Bravo should have been with the A Team instead of here. We shall see how he'll do though.

Yeah expecting Barath to debut in the Tests against Bangladesh.

The four-man bowling attack often fielded by the Indians is a weak attack, and the part-timers are often utter rubbish. They have to be treated with kid gloves and pampered a lot, while the main bowlers struggle. The objective behind this selection is to get the batsmen who can bowl (particularly Yusuf and Nayar, neither of whom are frontline batsmen) to bowl like proper bowlers. You can then keep the bowling tight and steady without calling in a fifth bowler.

Nayar may be treated as a seamer, more a seam-up bowler, who will be useful on the slow pitches in the West Indies. Besides, his ability as a final-overs bowler is under-rated, especially when all Indian pacers struggle at that stage of a match.

Let's just hope he plays all the matches at three or four and not six or seven...

I must admit, I'm stunned that Simmons has been omitted....
The only conclusion I can draw is that the selectors are treating the A team game against Bangladesh from July 3-5 as more important than the ODIs against India.
