Here's what Dhoni said in the post match interview (summary not exact quotes):

I saw some movement on the rope area so I wasn't sure if I was out or not. The umpire said that the third umpire was not sure, and I could take the word of the fielder. But he had his back to the rope, and sometimes its hard to feel paper under your feet over there. So I wasn't sure. But then Lara came later and said that the fielder was sure, so I thought about it for a little bit and decide to take his word and declare.

I think thats good enough.

Anil bhai needs to bowl from both ends. We needa 45 overs from him tomorrow.
Yeah, Kumble should get 40-odd overs to get as many wickets as possible. The split should be Kumble with 40, Munaf with 20, Sreesanth with 10, VRV with 10 and the remaining 10 to be distributed according to which seamer is the most effective.

Here is a report from Prem Panicker on the situation :-

"....Ball five saw the batsman go down the track to a half tracker from Mohammad; he swung high and hard, and was held by Darren Ganga at deep midwicket on the line. No one could tell whether the fielder had taken the catch clean. The fielder in question said yes. The umpires checked, couldn’t decide, went upstairs, but Billy Doctrove in the third chair said he couldn’t say for sure either; the replays were just not clear enough to figure out whether the fielder’s foot was just on the line, or safely just inside it.

Then followed this ridiculous passage, with the on field umpires giving Dhoni the benefit; Lara pleading with the umpires to reverse the decision and, when that failed, in bizarre fashion asking Dhoni to give himself out…

Dravid, watching all this from the pavilion (it was he who, spotting Dhoni walking off when it wasn’t clear whether the catch had been made clean, waved him back to the middle), pulled a number on his counterpart when he declared the innings with no decision yet taken on Dhoni.

As moments go, this one seemed good -- judging by Lara’s visible desperation, he was feeling the heat and that seemed a good psychological moment to put the home team back in......"

I was listening to the ausio commentry and I did hear Trevor saying something about Dhoni being out and that Dhoni was walking and now Prem confirms it. So, it seems that Dhoni was indeed walking and stay only after his captain instructed him to stay because by then the replay seemed inconclusive.

I'm confused.

I thought the Browns were Cleveland and the Indians played some other confusing sport. Or was that the Redskins?

Because it's a balanced, reasonable viewpoint taking into account both sides of the argument and summing it up fairly and accurately...?
That holds less water than my bladder.

OK, so Dhoni was walking, but was waved back in by his captain. Still, I Lara's reaction to all this was quite childish.
He was just doing all he could to help his team and I guess it did because Dravid couldn't be bothered anymore and declared.

Lara should be fined for dissent. Umpires had clearly asked Dhoni to resume.

More importantly, he snatched the ball out of the umpire's hand. Did anyone else catch that? I have it recorded :P. That's why I thought it was childish. He was so mad that he basically said, "**** you" to the umpire and snatched the ball out of his hand and walked away trying to set the field again. All the while the umpire was trying to talk to him (and Lara kept walking away).

That's why I was taken aback that people accused Dhoni of unsportsman conduct and not Lara. I don't know how to explain why people chose to focus on Dhoni....

Agreed. The "he was just doing everything he could do to help his team" argument is rubbish. That's usually the reason behind dissent ... doesn't justify it.

That's why I said right away "I've lost respect for Brian Lara". I was surprised no one else felt that way at the time, glad you've seen it too. Really hope he gets hit hard.

I agree that he should be fined but my argument stil holds. I'm quite sure he could have done it more respectfully though but it's the idea of what he was trying to uphold i'm supporting.

If the batsmen were to take the fielder's word for it every time, none of the behind the wicket appeals would ever go without a wicket.
Since when is a fielder's word on catching the ball the same as the fielder's word on an edge?

Isn't it the same thing? It seems odd that you can 'trust' the wicketkeeper or the slip fielder when dealing with whether the ball touched the gound, but not whether they saw it touch the bat. They have a better view than the umpire a lot of times.

No, it is not.

A catch on the boundary there is the simple case of the fielder's word for taking the ball.

The edge has to be judged by the umpire.
