SL is probably the only place (and maybe some raging turners in WI) where Raina can do better than Rohit.
I'd pick Pujara ahead of both anyway.

Rohit's not playing because they can't find anyone else; he's playing because they really rate him and want him in the side. If you want him gone then it's really easy to find a replacement without doing something weird like picking Raina -- you just pick Pujara.

Against Herath on the Galle Day4 pitch, Raina is probably as good as Rahane tbh (and I am Rahane's biggest fan on cw). For all the flak that Raina gets in the longer format, we often forget how good he is against spin bowling.

I am not seriously advocating bringing back Raina though (because he'll be persisted with if he performs). It was just a random thought that crossed my mind.

Tbh I don't even really agree with this. In Tests he's sucked against spin as well. Swann made him look like an idiot.

Swann is an offie (a contender for the 2nd best in the last 25 years) and Raina is a leftie. Rahane, being a right-handed batsman, was getting out to Moeen Ali and Nathan Lyon - who aren't really comparable to Swann. Raina would hold his own against a left arm spinner like Herath imo.

It's weird to think this - but I was thinking Raina wouldn't be too bad in these conditions, would he? I mean if we picked him for just this one series and then regardless of the scores vowed not to pick him ever again - that wouldn't be a bad deal.
No better way to motivate someone to play well.

Raina's that good? Rahane's incredible at times, as he showed last match. Plus as you say if he performs well he might just be kept.

Raina's value is as a batting allrounder replacing Harbhajan. He's basically a better version of Jadeja, which is what I've been saying all along.

I wouldn't play him ahead of rohit or pujara.

Whatever it takes!!!
SL to smash us in bowler friendly conditions tbh... Only rain can save us this game, esp. since Rohit seems to be a shoe-in again...
