*Official* India in South Africa

Parthiv Patel is the replacement for Sachin?

Weird decision. It could really only mean that they are picking Patel in WC squad as backup keeper and want to give him match practice.

Otherwise Mukund and Dhawan were obvious choices.
I don't think this series serves much purpose beyond giving match practise for the WC probables from the teams pov.

I think all major series are doing that.

India SA 5 matches
Pak NZ 6 match
Eng Aus 7 match

too many stupid ODIs just before the world cup

Is there a deadline to announce WC 15s before the end of this week? Seems strange that South Africa are announcing their 15 tomorrow and Australia have already selected their 15, that despite both sides having plenty of ODIs left before the end of the month and opportunities to try players out. Be pretty ridiculous that Tahir will go or won’t go without getting a game (same goes for Faf).

Graeme Smith and Corrie van Zyl are so excited of having an attacking spinner that the plan isn’t to play him.

"All 14 teams participating in the tournament have to announce their preliminary line-ups by December 19 2010, and zero in on the final fifteen before January 19 2011. "

Probably don't want opposition teams to know what he bowls like.
He isn’t a mystery spinner like Mendis was and considering his exploits in England there is probably YouTube vids on him. Most of the England team have already faced or played with Tahir before and the Indians are well versed in combating a guy who has a googly, flipper et cetera.

Today is the last day to announce the squads since it says "before the 19th"

They've started shaving off all the grass to make the pitch play better under lights though, which helped a bit (although obviously not enough that anyone actually won a match batting second). Not sure whether they'll do that this year though, given the opposition.

South Africa are big favourites with the bookies so hopefully India win the toss.
