*Official* India in South Africa

SA are actually a pretty good ODI side at home. They beat Australia away, and home twice. Apart from 2-2 against England this year, they have been quite consistent at home. India on the other hand do not have the best ODI record over the last 2 years..remember defeats against Zimbabwe? And India also failed to beat Australia at home in an ODI series last year
England won 2-1.

Last time we played ODI's in SA, they tonked us worse than we beat NZ recently. That's why it came as such a massive surprise when we won the first Test. I'll be happy if we can win 2/5 games.
Current Indian team>>>That toured in 06. And no Pollock either. Steyn, Morkel are not as good in ODIs.

India's ODI form has been quite good. To quote myself from another thread :

India have beaten pretty much everyone over the last two-three years : Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka (twice), Australia in Australia (tri series), New Zealand in New Zealand, West Indies in West Indies, Asia Cup 2010, South Africa in India, Sri Lanka in India, England in India, Australia in India - the latest one if you count that as a "series". The only real blots on the record are a 3-4 loss to England in England and a home series loss to Australia in 2009.

As far as I remember, India have performed spectacularly every time they have fielded their first choice ODI XI over the last two-three years.

The India-Eng series in the summer is going to be huge. I have a feeling the Indian team might underestimate England a bit because they have never beaten India since 1996. Hopefully England will win big in the last Ashes test and erase any complacency. England will arguably be the best team India has faced since Australia in 2004.

India will be fine if they capitalize on England's weakness against spinners. Bhajji and Chawla could do damage in the tests if they are picked. Chawla because he has played a county season in England and knows the conditions. Then there is Zaheer. Praveen Kumar should play in England surely. Then we could play a 3rd seamer/2nd spinner according to conditions. The 3rd seamer should be Sreesanth. Ojha should be no where near the test side.

Would be great if Ishant Sharma went to England and played a bit of county cricket next year to improve his bowling.

I'd back Praveen to take an effload of wickets in England. The selectors won't though. They'll pick Sree and Ishant again.

The problem is the selectors look to be keen on blooding a new unproven bowler each time in the hope of him turning out to be a prodigy instead of proven FC bowlers who, while definitely not having much of a chance of being extremely good bowlers, atleast will most likely be test-class bowlers which is much more than can be said of Ishant and Sree atm.

The worst part is the above two will keep getting picked despite consistently averaging 40+ for every series because they're part of a winning team despite contributing SFA to it. It is the single most annoying and illogical trend of selectors across the world.

Would you blame them? :p
Not at all. Actually, I reckon they could potentially be okay to Yadav, because he has got a bit of pace, but as for Mithun and Unadkat who at 80mph and do not move the ball - yeh, it could be brutal. As much as I despise him, I'd happily have Sreesanth in the team over any of those three (you can add Ishant to that too, actually).

My ideal situation would be to have an attack of Zaheer, Munaf, Praveen and Harbhajan. Praveen can bowl extensively with the new ball and then perhaps bowl with the wicket keeper up to the stumps in an attritional role, otherwise. Praveen can bolster the batting too. Actually, thinking about it, perhaps R Vinay Kumar would be a better pick than Praveen, as he has that 5kph extra that will make him less useless with the old ball, but again, I'm not too sure.

Mark my words, these two -Ishant and Sree- will disappear off the radar soon after Zaheer retires if they don't grow up as bowlers.

I'd have both Vinay and Praveen over Munaf
The more I think about it, the more I am weary about picking Praveen. After the first spell, he tends to drop to around 120kph which is pretty damn slow for Test cricket. Do not really remember anyone doing well at that pace at Test cricket other than perhaps Chaminda Vaas.

I was just watching the highlights of the third test between India and South Africa in 2006, which was also played at Cape Town. We squandered a brilliant opportunity to win the series, after scoring more than four hundred in our first innings. India must make sure it does not happen again. If we lose this series then all the talk of India being "home bullies" will start again. On the other hand, a win will shut all the doubters up, at least for the time being. Melbourne 2004, Cape Town 2006 - please don't add Cape Town 2011 to that list, India.
