I just hope it keeps on raining from an Indian point of view. For the sake of the game, I hope it stops.
For the sake of the series, I hope it doesn't stop. Continued rain here coupled with the bad light at Durban would balance out the umpiring rubbish and all external factors that are "a part of the game" would be effectively negated, providing the fair result of a 1-1 draw.

Just seen pictures of the ground on Sky and the rain has stopped. Cover is off the wicket and the clear up job is into overdrive.

Tbh, the Indian tours of Eng and Aus are more important to me personally, and I fear that a 1-1 draw may gloss over a few areas which need desperate attention before those tours occur. Losing this series, if it does happen which it may well still occur, won't take away the fact that we beat SA on the toughest pitch to bat on all tour which we should be proud of. It also won't take away the fact as well that we didn't capitalise on times when we could have won the series, and were far too hestitant. We shouldn't have lost in Durban and shouldn't here, but because of a mix of uninspiring batting, and a lack of desire to stay out and fight, we have.

I was talking to a mate at the cricket club, he's an Indian fan and isn't a fan of Rahul's captaincy. Whilst I disagree on the whole, I do think that we lacked a killer instinct in this series when we could have taken the game to the South Africans. We will not get away with it in Eng or Aus IMO, as they are both better teams.

If we draw the series, I do agree that its probably a fair result due to various factors, but at the same time I just want the main issues ironed out and fixed up. I'm mainly referring to the batting and overall attitude of the team.

Wow, still raining.

What's the rule say if it stopped raining by 5pm, light was fine, and the outfield and conditions were fine to play again, but the scheduled close of play is 5:30? How much longer can they go for?
Indefinitely, light permitting. There's no cutoff point in terms of the close of play time on the final day of a test. You bowl 90 overs. If there's an interruption to play after the scheduled close however, the test will end. That's my understanding anyway, the rules are a bit hard to follow since the change to a maximum of an extra half hour on days 1-4.

Cricinfo.com "Moving on, the umpires have just confirmed that the light is good enough to play. They're just waiting for the covers to be removed. As of now, there is no rain, though the sky remains ominously grey. The South Africans will be confident of knocking off the remaining runs in about 75 minutes, and if the rain stays away, they should get that."

 Makes me all the more happy the covers are coming off then.. I've been really impressed with the Indian fans this tour compared with some of the idiots we used to have on the forums, don't spoil it

Uh oh, its raining as I write this. The covers are back on, and the umpires are standing around with a red-and-white striped umbrella. Will South Africa's victory procession become a damp squib?-

8-)

Raining again.

I feel for SA supporters, but at the same time I'm reminded of Durban 2004 vs. Eng and how they exploited the light situation for their own sake (still lost the series mind, and I was supporting them in that one) so it is a bit of Karma, even if its in rain form now.

Still, not over yet.

Tell me what's wrong with my statement and I'll take it back. Bad umpiring and bad weather are both part of the game; isn't it ideal that the part of the game which the players don't control should even out then? By the way, thanks for implying that I'm an idiot. :)

What do people think is the minimum time required for SA to get these extra 100 runs?
Just about to ask that question. I'm not sure how India would approach this if play resumed now. Do they continue with spin or go with pace given the overcast conditions?

Bad umpiring or not, South Africa have pretty much outplayed India in the last 1.5 Tests (counting this one as practically over). Watching the teams you could tell who the better one is, even allowing for South Africa's first Test debacle.

Bad light has also already affected South Africa rather significantly. It almost cost them a deserved win in the 2nd Test.

Also, I think there's something to be said for Tests finishing on cricketing terms - no due to the elements.

Can't win the test with the time left IMO (that's if SA have to rush to get their runs).

Bowl defensively, outside leg with the spinner(s), field defensive is my thoughts.
