***Official*** India in South Africa 2017/18

India is not chasing anything close to 300. Even without Steyn, RSA attack is still pretty formidable
Nah, everyone would be putting their bad shots away and will be looking to play a real test innings given the way they threw it away in the first innings. Might just be enough to chase 300 imo. But then again, SA still have two exceptional fast bowlers so it might go the other way. Anyone's game.

AB de Villiers has been the difference between the two sides, coming in at 12/3 and putting on a game changing partnership. Without his incredible momentum shifting knock in the 1st innings, SA could have easily fallen for a low total, possibly in the range of 150-180.

From there on, the game would have been 50-50 and or even slightly in India's favour but he turned the whole equation of the game right around, not only recuing SA but putting India to the sword on a very lively pitch and setting the tone for lower order to follow through in similar vein.

Imagine if ABD hadn't returned to Test cricket, this game and series would be very well alive.

But as things stand, India is staring at a big defeat because even a target of 200-220 runs would have required quality batting on this wicket, where a flurry of wickets are almost inevitable, especially when it's Rabada and co who are bowling. Rabada imo is arguably world's best bowler and SA's most devastating atm. With Steyn out, Rabada with the new ball could truly embarrass India. Today he came on after 20 odd overs and looked easily the most threatening of the bowlers and I had been surprised he hadn't come on much earlier.

I wouldn't be surprised if India's top order is 3/30 again. However even if its a decent start, say 50/1, it could turn into 100/5 given the nature of the SA attack and wicket. So any target that SA sets will almost certainly be well beyond India's range. This is the reality especially with a batsman short.

300 would be next to impossible, just like it would be on a rank turner in India where totals of around 200 runs are considered be relatively good and often match winning. (India at 92/7 illustrated that).

Its far more likely that India would get bowled out for less than 150 than come close to chasing any target.

Yes but this is not a green top. The wicket has flattened out considerably.

If we're to stand a chance SA need to be all out before lunch today. Don't see it happening but I hope we put up a fight and at most lose by <100 runs.

India have a narrow window to take early wickets and get back in the game. Hopefully rain/overcast conditions provides the bowlers with some assistance. The batsmen will need to show some some discipline with those fatal pokes outside off-stump. Stein's injury is obviously a bonus. Overall I would give them a 20% chance of pulling off a win.

I know the Cape Town people really need their rain, and this match is going to get a result anyway, but I really wish this had happened on Monday or Tuesday when I'd be at work.

Yeah, rain's provided India with a shot at getting back in the game. Send Amla, ABdV, Faf and QdK packing in this session and it's possible.

I did not have the heart to even think of cricket or visit this thread all day. I kept checking Tristan Holmes and Firdoose Moonda's Twitter last night hoping to read "Steyn just went inside to change his boots"

This will still be a great series as there are some brilliant players across the teams but I don't feel an iota of excitement. I'm just devastated. "I hope this is not the last we see of him" is what I felt in December 2015 when he broke down against England, then November 2016 at Perth and now it's 2018 and it's the same all over again.
