***Official*** India in South Africa 2013/14

Jono

Virat Kohli (c)
I'm not prepared to say Rahane is the better player overall just yet. Better player in South African conditions? Yeah, sure.

Should definitely be batting five anyway though because he's more suited to it.
This pitch isn't very South African. Sure its moving a bit but not that much bounce.

Agree its too early to determine who is better. But this is seriously impressive from Rahane. The biggest positive from an Indian point of view for this tour.

We got blind-sided by how awesome Pujara and Kohli have been. And excuse me if I still rue over the Kohli dismissal and wish the umpire gets food poisoning for the next week.

Happy for Rahane, Kohli, Pujara and Vijay, a good learning curve for them and they showed a lot of fight. Shammi bowled well, Ishant has lost a really wonderful opportunity, had the conditions in his favour, but bowled well in patches and was bad in the 2nd test. Zaheer has been a big disappointment, it was shocking to see him bowl so many loose deliveries every now and then. I hate Rohit Sharma, but he deserves more chances to prove himself.

As usual, MSD, the odd man out in the test team didn't look like he belonged. His captaincy is more suitable for the shorter formats, he did make some good decisions in the series, but overall, his captaincy has never been up to the mark in tests. And I'll avoid commenting on his batting:sleep:

And this match can still end up in a draw, who knows, if Rahane can keep going with the tail.

Was impressed with Rahane when he played odis in Eng in 2011 and vertainly rate him well above the likes of Rohit, etc

Anything he did was hugely nullified by selecting Ishant and Zaheer. Yes, I am going to keep repeating this as much as I can. Having Umesh and Bhuvi on the bench was gut-wrenching. When you don't trust your pacers enough to take the new ball, why the **** are you selecting them, mother-****er!! :@

Funny how often this comes up. I knew a lot of people agreed with me at the time but I didn't think it'd be so memorable to everyone for so long. Just one of those random ODI series that sticks with a lot of people I guess. Fully agree fwiw.

Everyone remembers if they see a rose in a sewer.

I am still in shock by Jadeja, if he was my teammate I just do not know how I could approach him..

In the first test Steyn got criticized by every second couch cricketer for not going for the win. He made a decision that at all cost he would NOT let his team down.

Jadeja does not give a flying ****.

I think accusing him of not caring is a bit much. It was just really bad batting.

Must be really annoying for Indian fans though. Given how well he's bowled since coming into the side, all he needs to do with the bat is average somewhere in the 20s and contribute occasional partnerships with set batsmen to hold his spot and be a valuable cricketer. Not too big an ask for someone averaging 50 odd with the bat in First Class you'd think, but apparently so.

I said earlier in the thread that you don't pick a bloke at #8 to bat well every time; you have him there with the idea that long term he'll add value with the bat sometimes. I think it's an important spot - not something you can rely on as such, but something that will help over a medium-term sample when he chips in. So if you told me at the start of the game that Jadeja took six wickets but got 0 and 8 with the bat I'd say he justified his selection, but it wasn't just that he failed with the bat; he batted so very poorly in two innings that you'd not have confidence in him to average much more than 10 going forward.

but it depends on the situation. Even at number 8 you need to show fight especially to save the series. And it is not like he is selected in the team for his bowling. They want him to he a decent batsman as well. his record indicates he is capable of more or at least just hang around.

And his strike rate this game was still just about ten overs people per wicket.
