So this is what the squad is shaping up to be?
India in South Africa 2013-14 : India set to pick Test squad early | Cricket News | South Africa v India | ESPN Cricinfo
"Test squad certainties M Vijay, Shikhar Dhawan, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kolhi, Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, MS Dhoni, R Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Ravindra Jadeja
Remaining four Test slots Two out of Zaheer Khan, Jaydev Unadkat and Ishant Sharma; two out of Gautam Gambhir, Dinesh Karthik, Suresh Raina and Pragyan Ojha"
The article says Zak might not be in the squad unless he's in the XI? What? What kind of crazy nonsense is that? Surely India know that this thing called injuries happens. Zak is so much better than Ishant and Unadkat, it's laughable that this is even a debate. Plus, I think it's not a bad idea to flirt with Ashwin at 7 and play four seamers. And I'm surprised that Pandey isn't in the mix if a fifth seamer is to be selected. He's miles better than Unadkat and Ishant.
As far as backup openers go, Gambhir has to be given the decisive edge over Dinesh. That said, Dinesh or Saha would be good backup wk options.
Ojha deserves a spot, I really think he can bowl well overseas given his consistency. That said, if India select a backup wk, it'll be hard for him to find a place (though I'd take him instead of a fifth seamer).
And on a final note, WHY THE HELL IS RAINA IN THE CONVERSATION? I really want to put the final nail in the coffin to his test career, but as unfair as that is, he needs AT LEAST 2-3 years of quality domestic FC before even being considered for selection. Manpreet Juneja, in his second season, is already miles ahead of Raina as a first-class cricketer. Raina was poor in Ranji last season. He is poor in domestic FC and widely known to have a shaky technique (that's even shakier than most think, short stuff isn't his only problem), the only explanation is him being a CSK chela. And why doesn't this CSK-chela-ism ever work in favor of poor Badrinath?
