All the issues in Guptill's play have been there in this innings too. Terrible strike rotation, no ability to find the gaps and a reliance on boundary hitting to get his score going. That means he fails more often than he wins.

So no cricketing reason. Bowling is also India's big time weakness. Probably Dhoni should give bowlers the cover of big total to defend occasionally. Hasn't India lost 4 games in a row trying to chase? The bowlers are allowing opposition to put up a mountain of runs every game.

Obviously will agree that Ind bowlers are struggling to contain the NZers. But the Indian batsmen were a little unlucky to lose both games. IMHO another 2 overs of the Kohli / Dhoni in either game would have got them home.

Note that in the recent Ind vs Aust series the team batting second chased down 359, 303 and 350.

So yes, there is a cricketing reason for Dhoni to bowl first.

Yeah it's really not a great team strategy IMO, unless we have Mills or a Neesham in the team to extend our batting to 9 it just gets too risky.
