There really is a genuine chance of McGain playing, isn't there?

When was the last time someone in Australia shot from obscurity to riches so quickly? John Watkins?
Colin Miller? Nathan Hauritz? Brad Hogg himself at WC2003?

Don't understand why Australia have to play a spinner.

Lee-Clark-Johnson-Tait/Hilfenhaus-Watson seems good enough to me.

None of those had been out of First-Class cricket for 3 years, having played negligable amount of the stuff ITFP, and aged 35 though had they?

Amazing as it sounds, Hauritz's selection in 2001\02 did actually make some sense - if you believe that a wicket-taking, espensive bowler at domestic level will make a good ODI bowler.

Miller I know was a fairly remarkable case, but I think he'd at least had a First-Class career of some remote note for a few years before deciding to try fingerspin hadn't he?

Was referring to Hauritz playing a test match, not his selection for ODIs. EDIT: Which I realise doesn't make sense because selecting someone with an international ODI cap to their name for a test is not really "plucking them from obscurity", even if it seemed an unlikely thing to occur.
Reckon Miller was a pretty remarkable case, especially as he did so well once he got in and became a huge cult figure - completing the rags to riches story.

No way Watson will play - they picked Symonds, Noffke, and Hopes ahead of him for the CH series, which probably tells us where the selectors see him at the moment. Symonds will be the allrounder.

The Aussie selectors like having a spinner. We'll need a spinner, IMO, at the SCG, the MCG and probably Adelaide as well.

McGain was slightly undervalued, and just in the wrong place in the right time. I think for a bit he'd been written off as a guy who was always going to be a very good district player, but didn't have the tools for FC cricket. This is bowling every week on first day pitches though, and he's deceiving at times. His action looks so simple that you think he won't be doing that much with the ball. He knows his game inside out, and I'd be very confident of an honest performance from him if he were to be picked out of nowhere. However, they have to go with Hogg.

Sorry, just felt like making a random comment for some odd reason. :p

As regards Hauritz's Test selection - he was hardly an obscurity, was he? Awful selection, sure - obscurity, no.
Hence my edit - made before you pointed it out.
