I think I can sort of understand Rahul's thought process now.
Skips down the track to whip it through midwicket, didn't reach the pitch and didn't adjust accordingly.
Kohli tells him the old "if you want to go after something, don't go half hearted"
Sees it tossed up nicely outside off, brainfart makes him go full hearted, ball bounces a touch extra and he's the most hated man in cricket for the next 15 minutes.
It's not an excuse, but at least if it's true I can sort of comprehend the thinking (or lack of) behind it.

Yeah but people are advocating the inclusion of all rounders like a Jadeja who would bat in precisely the same way, instead of a genuine batsman at six.

I really despise Dhoni at times. He seems to think there are shortcuts to score more runs and he just needs to find the next whacky unorthodox technique to survive and thrive rather than just try and improve as a test batsmen by leaving deliveries he doesn't need to play at and play with a straight bat until he gets set.
The same mentality seems to rub off on the team and eventually you have a bunch of cricketers who rarely improve on their game and their weaknesses.
