***Official*** India in Australia 2011/12

The Tiger King
Sharma should be given a run IMO. He does seem to have a better technique than a lot of the individuals going around. It is about application and fitness that I think Sharma needs to work on

28 in last 16 tests sounds Ponting-ish

Mukund is racking up huuuuge numbers in domestic cricket isn't he? Deserves another go IMO

Mukund imo has massive holes in his technique the kid Rahane looks really good should get a go if Gambhir has another quiet game.

Gambhir is a bit of a worry for India. He hasn't scored a hundred since January 2010 - almost two years ago - and that too was against Bangladesh. His last hundred against serious opposition was in this match in 2009 where India racked up 642 with the top three all scoring big tons. In his last 16 Tests he averages 28. He'd probably be close to being dropped by now if not for the gritty innings he played in South Africa; but even that was based a lot more on resolve than a strong technical base. I suppose the most interesting question is who people think India would bring in for him if they decided to drop him at some point this series; would Sharma play with Dravid opening, or would Rahane come in and open himself?
His ODI performances work in his favour perhaps more than they should. But Mukund was even worse in England and the fact that he was so troubled by the bounce at Trent Bridge doesn't bode well for a series in Australia, and Rahane hasn't played a test at all. Piling up plenty of runs in Indian domestic cricket takes quite a different skillset to what is required for the remainder of the series. Gambhir probably won't score any runs but he's still their best bet considering that none of his potential replacements have been through anything comparable before. The Indian selectors don't drop established players lightly so I'd be very surprised if they don't leave it until after the series to re-evaluate. 3,500 runs at 46 don't count for nothing.

His partnerships with Sehwag also give a false impression of how well he's playing IMO.

Aren't they comfortably India's best ever opening partnership? Or did that statistic go by the wayside when they stopped scoring runs.

Could really use a partnership now.

The new batsmen (Mukun, Rahane, etc) pile up the runs in domestic but fail against bounce and the moving ball. BCCI really needs to send these guys to county cricket to gain some exposure. That way they get to play against different bowlers in different conditions. It's a win/win. ****ing BCCI. There's no point in averaging 50-60 in a domestic Ranji season if you can't play the rising ball.

Yeah, was contemplating the same thing during the first test match. The option of opening with Dravid, bringing in Sharma, and giving Kohli another go seems tempting. Because the point Dravid is having to come in at the moment is not far off from opening anyway. But then again, I'd like to back Rahane and see if he can deliver. Tough decisions to be made here.

Someone must have done something to piss him off again.
Funny you say that, he's batting now and just got bounced. Expletives were heard and a suggestion the net bowler pitch it up.

To which a very gnomish WA voice said "No **** him, give him some of his own medicine".

Pattinson bowling a lot here for the day before a game.
Seems like they heeded your letter of complaint RE closed sessions.

For all the marketing CA do, they don't let their biggest marketing tools - the Pontings, Clarkes, Johnsons, Haddins, Warners - anywhere near us common folk. Kids can be inspired by meeting their heroes, but these days that only happens if you attend a book signing of the latest Captain's Diary.
