Pothas is England-qualified? He's up and available for England selection?

How braindead do you have to be to pick Nixon ahead of him?

Never thought I'd hear you pushing the selection of a Saffie-who-initially-only-moved-through-flying-the-flag-of-convenience, though, DB!:lol:
Maybe your'e confusing him with me? I'm afraid, for me, Potha's 3 odi's for SA are the end of the story, whatever the qualification rules may say.

Love ya use of apostrophes...

Nah, don't think I've ever conversationed with you on the subject... have done with DB... many times 8-)

And I'm really rather surprised if he's yelling for Pothas' selection, though for me if he wants to play for England there's no other logical choice.

I'm honestly amazed he's England-qualified, though... I never knew he was trying, I thought he was just an unabashed I'm-only-playing-here-because-I've-got-an-EU-passport-and-I-can-earn-far-more-than-at-home type? Maybe I was wrong...

I'm not exactly "yelling" for his selection, but I have been on his bandwagon for a while. I've definitely made pro-Pothas posts before now. He's now qualified on residence &, as an EU passported player, he's a de facto pom anyway. If he refused selection I reckon he'd possibly prejudice his status as a non-overseas player.

And I've never been anti non-native born Poms (I think I've said before Robin Smith was somehing of a hero of mine when I was younger) if they're the best man for the job. I think Pothas is; doesn't make him English, but he is English-qualified, which is enough for me.

Gutted about the unnecessary apostrophes, which are one of my pet hates. For some reason I had Pothas as Potha. Don't know why. Anyway ...

Talking of which, maybe, did you hear about Rudolph playing over here as a Kolpak player next season? Possibly for Yorkshire.

D'you know how long I've been waiting to read that from your keyboard?

Oh, cripes, another promising SAfrican sacrifices his international career...

Well, if we had a player of Rudolph's calibre it might be useful for our ODI side in 4 years' time, I suppose...

Probably true about the stump mikes, but it's not easy to take Chappelli seriously on this one, after his boys lifted the bar on this particular event 30 years ago.
Yeah, although his point seems to be more about the more aggressive and incessant chatter that's going on now, rather than the occasional potshot. And to be fair, given the existence of the stump mikes, he brings up his own gaffe on-air at Nine, which nearly cost him his job.

Anyway, he has actually been commenting on this issue for a while now - you can read his thoughts here:

He's a very strange character, Chappelli. I disagree with him quite often, but I generally regard him as a fairly moral individual. I was just reading yesterday that he actually walked out of the commentary box the other week when the PM, John Howard entered, on the basis of his strong opposition to the govt's immigration detention policies. A guy you wouldn't want to get on the wrong side of by all reports, but you get the impression fairness is a high priority for him.

Interesting, that. I do rate him as a far more intelligent commentator than most, and perhaps I was being a bit unfair earlier. btw do you remember his spat with Botham years ago? I never did find out what that was initally about.

I heard it started when Chappell and Botham were both playing grade cricket in Melbourne, out on the turps. Maybe it had started before then though, and this was just an incident after the spat had started.

As mentioned, I believe it started in the 70's, in a pub. I think I read somewhere that Chappell was badmouthing the Poms, and Botham just let loose, sending Chappelli flying (this is a really hilarious image, BTW) over a table apparently being used by some AFL players, so food and drink is supposed to have gone everywhere. Tempers were calmed, and then Chappell made some other remark as he left, and Beefy chased him out into the street. Doubtless these accounts get embellished over time though.

I think it happened whilst Beefy was playing club cricket (may or may not have even made int'l) debut

Anyway, as for Chappell on sledging - no-one could tell me it's any worse today than in his day

I was under the impression that he hadn't even played for Eng at that stage.

What, the "What the &@*%'s going-on?" one?

What did that have to do with stump-mics?
He's referring to the fact that what he said was intended only for whom he was speaking to, but it ended up being broadcast to a massive audience via microphone. Therefore, in these times with stump mikes picking up much that is said, players need to be more responsible about their incessant chatter.

Ah, yes, I sees the connection I does.

Difference I was alluding to was everyone knows about stump-mics, they're always there and Chappell in that case was more comparable to the recent Dean Jones faux-pas.

But not everyone is aware of the volume at which they are set, e.g. you can swear to your heart's content 5 feet away in Oz but in SA recently (and Bangladesh when Oz toured there) you have to be far more careful

BTW, funny moments in the latter tour when Gilchrist resorted to using competing sponsors' slogans from behind the stump to get the mikes turned down

IMO turn them all up and keep em on all the time. If you are rallying against stump mics to hide your bigotry, then too bad for you. Not saying they should all be hooked into the live feed all the time but should all be on and recording.

Richard

^^^Amen to that, certainly. If you want to get away with bigotry, you need to speak well away from any mic.

I would like to see some kind of standardisation of stump-mic volume, though. I don't think it's fair to players for the thing to vary so much as it clearly does (you just need to listen to the different sounds bat-hitting-ball makes on British TV and those networks from the subcontinent to realise that).

I realise it'd be kinda hard to force all TV-companies to adhere to some central code, but, well... if the players are really concerned surely they could conduct their own tests prior to a series? Surely should they demand of the broadcasters what they will and will not be recorded? I'm sure DPAs give that right anywhere.
