Yeah agree with Burgey. In our club when it starts to get dark, we toss away the red ball and play with the orange ball.
White balls here and even then it seemed pointless when guys bowled half rat and still no-one could lay wood on them.

Yeah, there'll be no complaints from the England camp about the rain. I'd back them for at least one early breakthrough in the morning, but Johnson could well whack a few without Swann on the ball. Ought to be 320-350.

This is probably Hussey's best innings for two and a half years, given that his two centuries in that time involved either running out his captain or favours from Kamran Akmal.

That's being pretty optimistic. Hussey would have to get a big hundred to get us to 350, plus Haddin would have to get to at least 50.
It's worth remembering we still have 5 wickets left, and one of them scored an FC ton last time he picked up a bat.

Well tbf if Haddin gets in against new rock, he will score quickly. It's 130 runs for 5 wickets. Don't know it's that optimistic. Unless conditions go awry I'd expect them to get there.

Jimi to get Haddin tomorow morning, he better do or we are really in trouble.

If we can keep Australia to under 300 I shall be awfully pleased indeed.

Yeah, can definitely sense some acceleration against the new ball if these two are still at the crease when it comes. Things can change at the Gabba super quick if you throw caution to the wind a bit.

Meh, facing anyone quick in any light is a safety issue, but they still do it. It's Test cricket, man up and play.
Nah mate, there's a difference between picking up the line and length of a quick bowler in good light and not being able to do either because you can't see it in bad conditions. Don't reckon Anderson with the new pill in bad light would be that easy.

Given the reaction time batsmen have in good light, makes no sense to play in conditions where you are hampered in your reactions. Wouldn't want to be the team that lost a couple of wickets in a situation where they couldn't see well enough to play normally. Can understand English fans wanting it to continue though.

Had 20 on Haddin to top score.

Reckon he'll launch against the new ball. If he gets through that period he'll be past 50 and the field will be back. Shall be interesting. Said to my bro yesterday that playing cricket tomorrow would be annoying because I'll miss Haddin's century. As it stands it has been one of Haddin's best test knocks considering the context of the game and playing within himself IMO. He was beaten a few times but generally by absolute jaffer srather than loose technique or play.

They can still see the ball though. I'm not advocating playing in absolutely pitch black conditions with zero visibility - but that's not what happens when they go off for bad light. Suggesting they can't see the ball is a massive exaggeration - they just can't see it quite as well. \_/
Makes a huge, huge difference with bowlers at that pace. Have batted in bad light and, while I'm not Mike Hussey, the bowler definitely wasn't Anderson either. Against a very average medium pacer you couldn't see well enough to move your feet and play any shots once the light got bad.

As I said, you're talking about fractions of a second with these guys...makes a massive difference.

As it is...it rained anyway.

Come down the nets next week, ****. I'll pop the bowling machine on 85-90 mph and wait Til dusk. See how you go.

Exactly. It'd be like being in the Haunted House at the local fair...you hear a noise, but you don't know where it's coming from.

I'm not saying that they should play in the rain. That's beside the point. I was talking about going off early for bad light when you've got massive floodlights sitting there. What makes it safe in ODIs and unsafe in Tests?

Different coloured ball. I'm guessing a red ball isn't that easy to pick up under lights, which is why they use a white one in OD games.

I think the biggest positive for us today was Anderson's bowling. His last spell before lunch was excellent and his bowling in the evening session was very good. I didn't see the middle session but from what I've read and heard, he was excellent then as well.

I said it a week or so ago, if he has a good series, we will win.

Finn's bowling was very encouraging too, given he is our 'weak link'.

The difference between the two first innings is looking like it's going to come down to the hattrick, which is a bit of a freak event. The teams are still looking pretty evenly matched.
