And don't forget the amount of money that's been spent. Man Utd. and Man City have spent ridiculous amounts of money on transfers and wages and at some point it cannot fail to produce results.

A great reminder. We never hear about this every minute of every game featuring any team.

Madrid have declined this season but Tottenham deserve every bit of the praise coming their way for what they have done.

The Manchester teams, yeah, money will always be mentioned.

I've always thought that for the money spent by his predecessors, the squad Guardiola inherited was rubbish.

It definitely needs bringing up when you’re in two competitions (Prem and CL) bereft of wealth though. I don’t know how Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Real Madrid and Barcelona can even bear to play you in their poverty stricken states

Have you heard that <Man City player> cost more than the entire <bottom ten team>?

It definitely has nothing to do with <bottom ten team> absolutely fleecing City because they know they're rich and will pay what it takes.

It's kind of funny how spending a lot of money tends to be a commonly-leveled criticism irrespective of a team's performance.

If a team plays well and achieves a lot you always get the "hur dur it's because they're rich".

But if a team absolutely stacks it (e.g. Everton) the same people tend to roll out the "you can't spend that much money and play so ****, it's a disgrace".

Seems a bit like having your cake and eating it.

Football economics is ****ing weird. Having lots of money is supposed to give you less market power. Literally the opposite of the way the rest of the world works. And because everyone in the game believes it, it sort of becomes true.

I am pretty vocal about the way modern football has ruined itself, but to point at two clubs in isolation is bonkers

Low grade championship reserves earn more than directors at multinationals. This ain’t just city and united splashing cash that others don’t have.

And at any level, money alone will get you nowhere. Anyone who’s experienced the sheer hell of the conference can point to that as clubs like Dover and Eastleigh have splashed cash like no tomorrow and to no avail. Forest Green did it at the 403rd attempt. We get the biggest crowds in the division and languish in 14th.

As sledger said, look at Everton. Look at the seasons Tottenham and Liverpool had after selling Bale/Suarez and spending the lot.

And it’s not like it’s a new thing. It’s always been that way and always will be. The top players get the top money and the top clubs can pay the most money.

Pointing out the cash when they’ve had success is pointless. They’ve still got to get the job done.

In fairness, these people are morons.

Having a lot of cash to make big money signings is one thing, but it's annoying that they're basically able to write off massive transfer failures (~30m-50m type sums) in one or two windows. There's basically no penalty for spending badly. See Di Maria, Depay, Schneiderlin and so many Man City defenders that I've lost count.

It'll be all relative, so long as a club is managed well though.

I.e. a lower league team would be able to write off an equivalent loss so long as they were spending within their means.

The penalty for bad transfers is on the pitch. There’s a reason United haven’t been in a title race since Ferguson (well there are multiple, but in the context of this discussion...)

City's record with strikers is even worse.
