I'm actually less nervous about qualifying than usual tbh. Usually Arsenal don't have their transfer dealings wrapped up until after qualification is assured, and actually bringing in the desired targets basically hinges on getting through these games. This time round a lot of the business has already been done, so it's like the pressure is off a bit.

That said, the prospect of playing in the UEFA Cup, or whatever it is, is truly appalling, so they better not stack it. Besiktas aren't really any good though, are they? (famous last words)

These are like the world cup qualifies in October. They're kind of more important than the actual competition itself.

The recent changes (well about 3 years ago now iirc) make it harder for sides like Arsenal to qualify don't they?

Yeah, the champs of the shyter countries are now paired up as are the third/fourth placed teams from the richer leagues.

Didn't we get Turks last year too? Fenerbache from memory?

Not really, Arsenal will always be seeded. It makes it harder for 2nd placed teams from 2nd tier leagues like the Netherlands.

Job half done for Arsenal I guess. Lack of an away goal is slightly dodgy, but should beat Besiktas at home now.

Ok, the following is a fantasy team Burgeinho has put together on iteam. I don't know how that competition works, if it's any good or whatnot. I told him I'd seek some expertise as to whether it looks all right as a fantasy side, not having played fantasy epl before.

Unfortunately, there was no expertise available so I've had to come to the brain dead crew here on CW. Therefore, let me know what improvements he can make to this dies (and try to be a bit constructive, the kid is 12 ffs). There's apparently a salary cap involved, but I don't know what it is.

GK: Howard
Defenders: Ferdinand, Varela, Yoshida, Clichy
Midfield: Cleverley (even I know that's a **** selection), Lucas, Abeid
Forwards: Costa, Van Persie, Rooney

Sort it out, ****s.

He's probably better going for just Rooney - instead of having both him and RVP - and picking a main forward like Sturridge from another team that is likely to be their team's main focus and that will score loads of goals. I guess one of the big things is to get players that are likely to start for their teams.

His defenders aren't very good. I don't think Ferdinand or Varela will be part of many clean sheets (Varela will probably barely play, if it's the United kid). Clichy is likely to be rotated so he may not play all games. Yoshida may be a fair shout but Southampton may be getting Vlaar so he might be benched, as I don't think Fonte will be.

I reckon you either try to get cheap defenders from good teams that are good defensively and may get clean sheets. Or get defenders that are likely to get forward and score or assist (full backs or centre-backs that are good on set pieces).

I really don't know about the budget as I haven't played FF for ages, but none of his midfielders are likely to start many games either. It's probably better to go for the Bartons of the world if you can't afford better. Guys like Tadic may be cheap at the moment but will probably rise in price as he's definitely going to be key for Southampton. Cabella from Newcastle also.

Ikki's advice is pretty sound.

Coupla three points to tell the young fella that stand for all selections in the DT as score by the Premier League's site:

1) Don't try to pick a "proper" XI, chose the players who'll score you the most whether it's four full-backs in defence or four centre-halves

2) Defensive midfielders are effectively disenfranchised by the scoring; the scoring doesn't differentiate between attacking and holding midfield roles, so if the Arse don't concede Sanchez gets the extra point for a clean sheet in the same way as the chap screening the defence would.

3) Stick at it; managers rotate their squads an awful lot with eyes on Yurp in midweek, etc so always try have a gander at the (probable) starting line ups each week. The Guardian's squad sheet feature is semi-reliable on this front. RVP, for instance, didn't play versus the Swans. £12+m is a lot of money to sit on the bench from a budget of £100m.

Cheers Brumbers. I've passed both your points onto him, and he says thanks.

Which is interesting, as he's meant to be doing his maths homework aws.
