A touch of class by Bruce here (9:50):

To be honest have never warmed to the guy but he answers the question brilliantly.

Have a colleague swear to me that Lukic was better than Big Dave Seaman. Heh, anyone else seen them both play?

Meh, people have weird opinions on goalkeepers. They're so tough to compare. Sometimes you see a save that looks incredible at first, then on replay you realise a keeper with a different technique would have just sidestepped a yard and caught it. All the freely-available data on them is pretty worthless too.

The prank-keepers are easy to spot but comparing any two decent keepers is mostly just guesswork.

By all accounts he was a really decent player back in the day. I saw him play for Arsenal a few times, but he was largely past it by then.

My first memory of Lukic is him punching the ball into his own net against Rangers in the 1992/93 Battle of Britain.

Fair to say that I don't rate him.

I know almost nothing about keeping but I do think it is one of those positions that it is ways easier to judge live.

Lukic was class in 91-92 when Leeds won the title but peak Seaman was better. Didn't see any of Lukic's Arsenal career; Brumby will be able to answer though.

Johnny Lukic was a very solid keeper.

Seems incredible that an English goalie who won top flight championships with two different clubs (which must put him in very select company; I can't think of any others off the top of my head) never played for England. Especially nowadays when just playing in the Prem seems to be enough for a cap. Sadly his peak co-incided with Shilton, Clemence, Woods, Bailey and latterly Martyn and Safe Hands himself.

Seaman was probably more agile and could maybe pull off the odd miracle save that would've been beyond Lukic, but Johnny was far less prone to the **** up. Furball's post notwithstanding.

Gun to head I'd take Seaman, but Jennings was better than both. Spud ****er tho he may be.

Chris Woods is one who is never remembered these days, but he was gun too. Far better than any keeper we have available at the moment for my money. Seems to be one of history's forgotten men for some reason though.

Yeah, was maybe England's first choice for about 18 months or so between Shilton and Seaman.

Quality, but just unlucky to share his peak with two ATGs.

Probably doesn't help that he spent his peak at Rangers.

Goram was better than Woods though.

Gascoigne was past his very best when he came to us. Still brilliant for 18 months though.

And don't remind me. :(

Maybe, but it never did Butcher, Steven or Gascoigne any harm.

Your chaps were a serious team back in the day.
European ban presumably helped? Seems to me that, Gazza aside, once English clubs were back in Europe less of our talent crossed the border. Could be wrong.

Yeah, the European ban was a big help in attracting the top English talent north of the border. In 1986 we signed Butcher, the England captain and beat off Manchester United in the process. Absolutely unthinkable now. Although by the time English clubs came back into Europe we'd moved into signing more Scottish players anyway because having loads of English players wasn't a good idea with the 3 foreigner rule. In the summer of 1991 we seemed to embark on a program of selling off most of our English talent and replacing them with a Scottish equivalent.

Hillsborough also helped. We'd modernised our ground in the late 70s after the Ibrox disaster in 1971, so in the 1980s Rangers had the best, most modern ground in British football by a long way. Post Hillsborough, the Taylor Report mandated that clubs up and down the country spend tens of millions of pounds dragging their dilapidated ****holes into the 20th century - money that Rangers didn't need to spend and could afford to spend on players and salaries.

We really ought to have had a good run at the European Cup/Champions League in the decade between 1986 and 1996. Under Souness, I reckon we were hindered by the 3 foreigner rule. But a more ambitious appointment after Souness went down to Liverpool and I think, with the right Scottish signings (why we never signed Gary McAllister from Leeds I'll never know) and the financial muscle we had in the early 90s and we could have had a really good run at the big one.

Going to be a Bournemouth Fan. For no other reason than I'm new to the country and they are now new to the premiership. It's either them or Bradford, who I took to the Prem, FA cup and Champions league titles in 4 short years....

Such a shame to see traditional football town wigan's team, with no racist backing whatsoever, drop back into the lower leagues
