Carrick looked good sat in front of the defence, but obviously that went when he moved back.

Re Fellaini. He had a stinker of a first half, but one thing I noticed was every time he got the ball, he instantly looked right to forward right to look for the break down the flank. However unlike Young on the left, Valencia was constantly 10 yards behind play, and not moving. So Fellaini had to turn and look in, and that extra second cost him possession. No excuse for the pass that lead to their goal. 2nd half Fellaini was much better, and thats because every time he got the ball, he looked to Rooney for the pass instead.

Valencia was ineffective at both ends of the pitch again. He is a form player, and its completely shot being a full/wing back. Rafael coming back will make such a difference. We need some proper cover for that position really.

RVP deserves credit for last night. He'd already spotted Forsters position and pre-empted the back pass almost before Fonte even had the ball. Looked very sharp, especially considering how poor he's been in other games

Yeah I noticed Valencia was sitting very deep. I think he became more conservative because we were losing the ball a lot early on, and he didn't want to leave space behind him. But there were quite a few times we lost the ball because he wasn't pushing up to provide width, so it's hard to know which came first.

Fellaini was just poor all-round, and clearly doesn't have the distribution to play that role. Needs to be either playing high up the pitch with his back to goal or box-to-box.

Nice to know Liverpool were the TV companies preferred choice for all six group games over Arsenal. Not bias or anything though, honest.

It's a pretty clear red as far as I'm concerned, probably clearer than most elbow/raised arm type reds because there can be absolutely no doubting the intent - he looked back before swinging his arm/hand straight at Safari's face. The fact he then made no contact is irrelevant.

With that said, it is obviously clearly cheating by Safari and I doubt the red gets given if he doesn't go down, although I suppose whilst the refs continue to give nothing unless the player actually goes down it is understandable.

Should have thought Podolski's chances of starting the next few days has gone up a bit after this eve.

Stevie...you deserved more than that. Your whole career you've deserved more than what you've gotten.

Markovic is an idiot, but I'm tired of seeing play-acting rewarded in football. Europa League beckons.

Basel managed the end of that so badly, but their total refusal to slow the game down was a lot of fun to watch.

I thought it was a red too. He doesn't mean to poke him in the eye, but there's just no reason for his hand to be anywhere near there.

Well played Basel, deserve to go through.

Freaking Europa League - would so much prefer nothing.
