I don't see why he couldn't have moved to Chelsea. If he'd meant it when he said he wanted to leave, Liverpool would have sold and moved on rather than let him run down his contract for one more year.

I, for instance, recognise Gerrard as being a very good player. But would he make a list of my favourite (non-Arsenal) players? Not in a million years. And I suspect that is the case amongst plenty of non-Liverpool fans.
I'm surprised by this. I would have thought that most Englishman who don't hate Liverpool would admire a passionate one club man who has given great service for his club and country for the past 15 years. I would say that in Australia he is the most respected (and close to favourite) English footballer in the world today.

Yeah, came here to say this. :)

To admire and to like something are not the same thing.

To paraphrase Clarkson, that's a bit like saying that syphilis is the best of the ***ually transmitted diseases.

Admittedly much of my dislike for Gerrard is that he plays for Liverpool, but tbh I don't think I'd like him much anyway, for reasons that are admittedly in part outside of his control. The way the English press write about him you would think he was the best midfielder of his generation, which frankly he just wasn't. Not his fault obviously, but it really is very tedious. It's also fair to say though that whilst his list of ****ish acts are far shorter and less serious than the lists of many footballers, it does exist.

I also disagree with GIMH about how his transfer request fiasco doesn't impact on the question of his loyalty. I agree in so far as it's really a relatively minor issue but hypothetically if Wayne Rooney was to end up spending as long at Man Utd as Gerrard has done at Liverpool absolutely no-one sensible would consider him loyal for it. Loyalty is more than just staying at one club for a length of time and handing in a transfer request is disloyal, even if it's justified - I don't actually think 100% loyalty is a good thing anyway so I wouldn't use it as a stick to beat him with.

I agree with all Halsey has said here, though I do not possess the intrinsic dislike for Liverpool that he does. Even if we are to accept Gerrard's loyalty, however, I don't see why this should make me like him more. I can see how this might make Liverpool fans like him more, but as someone who has no affiliation with Liverpool whatsoever it's another of these things which is perhaps admirable but doesn't make me warm to him. See also: John Terry/Chelsea.

I would have thought that the vast majority of Australians would nominate either Rooney or Beckham with Gerrard hardly getting a mention

Becks is retired now though. :) Barely know a soul who likes Rooney tbh. And that includes United supporters, haha.

Yeah but we are talking about Australians and Gerrard/Liverpool have barely made a decent headline here for years until a couple of months ago

Beckham is almost a household name everywhere and I wouldn't bet that most Australians know that he has retired whilst Rooney is the best of the rest

Yeah very odd statement, Liverpool have possibly made the biggest impact here in a long long time.

We remember them today, you should never go to a game of football and not come back.

Whites played Hartlepool away that day and a copper said to one of ours, "your mates from Liverpool have kicked off big time at Sheffield Wednesday"

Even then history was being rewritten. A national disgrace, for 23 years.

RIP.

What? Sounds like a total bargain to me.

On a related note, this broke last week. I guess it's just hard to put a good spin on news when you're so turd on the pitch.

It is mad money really, but I guess if any player is worth that amount Kroos would probably be one of the more deserving ones.

Manchester United offering Toni Kroos £260,000 a week to join | Football | theguardian.com

Do United plan on actually leaving any money aside for transfer fees? It kind of epitomises how the club have turned for the worse this season. Having to offer players around the the 300k a week mark so they sign/don't leave.
BTW Cabs, have you read Soccernomics? I think it'd be very much your thing.

I ask because one of their findings is that clubs should spend far more on wages and far less on transfer fees.

Nah, will add it to the long list of books I want to read after my exams are done. Maybe 260k isn't a lot for him, I don't know, but it just seems quite excessive to me. Surely that's about twice as much players of his ilk usually get? He's only on 65k a week at Bayern where Ribery and Robben are the highest paid player at 165k.

Marco Reus is on 60k a month btw, which is about eight times less than Ashley Young. But I guess that's an odd example.
