There are certain exceptions e.g. Lampard and Gerrard cant play together so discount their international form

IMO, that is such a crock of ****

The reality is that they were probably nowhere near as good as the press/club fans would have you believe
I'm Australian, as you know, but I do believe the tactical considerations did limit England's success as much of an excuse that is. Both Lampard and Gerrard have done wonderfully in the CL - which I would probably say is the highest quality and most competitive of football played during their careers.

Gerrard, Rooney, Lampard, Scholes, Cole, Ferdinand, Terry, etc, are IMO world class players. They should have done better, for sure though.

Most of you underrate Gerrard IMO, especially the Istanbul performance & his England performances (one of only about 3 to emerge from the WC with any credibility FFS), but we seem to have a debate about him every 3 weeks, can we all, like, agree to disagree or something.

At the time Milan was as comparable, if not better than the Juve you're talking about with Keane. Milan went to 3 finals in 5 years and won 2. Juve went to 3 finals in 3 years and won 1. Moreover, United were a far better team that year than Liverpool were when we went to the final. Ours was truly a David v Goliath final.

The fact that you think it was only 10 minutes is telling. Gerrard played 3 positions in that game, CM, SS and then played the rest of the game as RB to keep Serginho quiet. He scored one and won the penalty for the other. We were 3-0 down to a team that at 0-0 was expected to win easily. That comeback is the greatest I've ever seen in football and arguably of all sports. Keane wishes he could have influenced a game like that.
Keane wishes he could influence a game like that? 2-0 away to the best club side around, having drawn 1-1 at home, and Keane scores 2 and sets up the other despite being booked and ruling himself out of the final should United progress?

I get that you're massively biased in favour of Gerrard but it's clear you haven't watched any of the other matches in question.

Actually, I've watched all the games we've discussed here and I remember the Juve game. Ironically, back then I wasn't a fan of any team in England and remember cheering Keane's goal because him and Scholes were my favourite players - Dad's influence. That he got himself booked has romanticised that performance a hell of a lot. But in terms of the level of that performance, the opposition, the state of the game and importance of the match it isn't on the same level as Istanbul, sorry.

And really, you push this game hard as your justification and I don't think it's right. Keane wasn't noted for these kinds of performances. Robson is more comparable to Gerrard in this regard.

P.S. Keane scored one goal and assisted no other. You sure you watched the game? :p

Incidentally, the Guardian Joy of Six great individual performances mentions both the Manure vs Juventus and Liverpool vs Milan games.

For the great individual performance in Istanbul it highlights Dietmar Hamann as the player.

His shackling of Kaka letting Gerrard get forward was pivotal. But nah. MOTM: Gerrard. Probably a decent debate for Hamann and Keane though.

Also, the tactical change Rafa made is rarely mentioned. Most people ask what he said to spur the team at half-time and don't realise he overhauled the team set-up. Was a wonderful move to a 3-5-2.

Can't see any news besides reports from Twitter. Did he leave or was he asked to?

BTW, Gerrard named England captain.

Sacked most definetly and probably the right call.

Martinez seems to be the early favourite, would be a great chance for him and he would be given time and funds to have a real crack at it.

Really hope that doesn't happen, would mean I have to start liking Liverpool and Wigan would no longer be as fun.

A brave, albeit undoubtedly correct, decision by the Liverpool owners here. Kenny was never going to cut it, letting him have another crack at it would have only seen Liverpool stagnate whilst the teams above and around them moved on. Whoever comes in may have a hard job winning over the fans though.

**** no.

Bielsa please! I wonder if Rafa is in the running.

Yeah, think Kenny was sacked. Apparently his son Paul was saying Kenny definitely wanted to stay and prove he could do better next season. TBH, it is not undeserving at all and Kenny has to see that. More importantly, Kenny's fans have to see that too.

Rafa been mentioned but I doubt it.

I love Bielsa but it would be a massive gamble, hoping he stays where he is anyway.

Martinez is certainly a risk as well but think it could be a good move, certainly bring a very different atmosphere to the club and he plays good stuff. They have got to keep Suarez though, whoever comes in.

FENWAY SPORTS GROUP AND LIVERPOOL FOOTBALL CLUB PART COMPANY WITH MANAGER KENNY DALGLISH

Search for new Manager begins immediately as owners pay tribute to 'legend' Dalglish

Fenway Sports Group (FSG) and Liverpool Football Club announced that Kenny Dalglish is to leave his post today as Manager after having his contract terminated.

After a careful and deliberative review of the season, the Club came to the decision that a change was appropriate. It is not a decision that was reached lightly or hastily.

The search for a new Manager will begin immediately.

Principal owner John Henry was fulsome in his praise for the outgoing Manager.

"Kenny will always be more than a championship winning manager, more than a championship winning star player. He is in many ways the heart and soul of the club. He personifies everything that is good about Liverpool Football Club. He has always put the Club and its supporters first. Kenny will always be a part of the family at Anfield.

"Our job now is to identify and recruit the right person to take this Club forward and build on the strong foundations put in place during the last 18 months."

Liverpool Chairman Tom Werner said it was a tough decision, but ultimately one that needed to be made.

"Kenny came into the Club as Manager at our request at a time when Liverpool Football Club really needed him. He didn't ask to be Manager; he was asked to assume the role. He did so because he knew the Club needed him. He did more than anyone else to stabilize Liverpool over the past year-and-a-half and to get us once again looking forward. We owe him a great debt of gratitude.

"However, results in the Premier League have been disappointing and we believe to build on the progress that has already been made, we need to make a change.

"We are committed to delivering success for our supporters and our ambition remains resolute to return this great Club to the elite of England and Europe, where it belongs."

Kenny Dalglish's departure brings to an end his second spell at the Club where, as a player, he won numerous honours, including six English league titles and three European Cup trophies. As Manager he won three league titles, two FA Cups and of course this season, the Carling Cup.

Dalglish said he is proud to have served such a great Club.

"It has been an honour and a privilege to have had the chance to come back to Liverpool Football Club as Manager. I greatly appreciate the work that Steve, Kevin, the players and all of the staff put in during my time and feel proud that we delivered the Club's first trophy in six years winning the Carling Cup and came close to a second trophy in the FA Cup Final. Of course I am disappointed with results in the league, but I would not have swapped the Carling Cup win for anything as I know how much it meant to our fans and the Club to be back winning trophies.

"Whilst I am obviously disappointed to be leaving the football club, I can say that the matter has been handled by the owners and all concerned in an honourable, respectful and dignified way and reflects on the quality of the people involved and their continued desire to move the football club forward in the same way as when they arrived here.

"I would like to thank all of the staff at the Club for their effort and loyalty. I said when first approached about coming back as Manager that I would always be of help if I can at any time and that offer remains the same.

"Finally, I want to put on record my heartfelt gratitude to Liverpool's fans, who have always given me and the Club their unwavering support. Without them neither the Club nor I would have achieved anything."

----

Reckon the trophy thing again is a reason why he needed to go. If you can't be realistic and see the importance of the CL then why should the owners keep you?

Was surprised yesterday when all of the mates of Kenny (MOTD guys) were saying he wasn’t going anywhere. Kenny spent/sanctioned huge money on ****e, finished nowhere and won a crap cup. If Liverpool is a business and the owners are competent, of course he was going to get sacked.

Can you imagine him working with Downing?

Would like to see Martinez get the gig.
