First was defo the keeper's fault
Yeah just had a think about it and seen he left himself no chance to get it. Would apportion blame to both the defenders for not making it more difficult for Agger and De Gea for misjudging.

Even if the goal couldn't technically be described as his "fault" (not that I think that it wasn't), his actions during it still demonstrated ridiculous levels of incompetence.

Yeah, was all over the place. Neither on the line nor making any real attempt to get close to the ball. In real no man's land, goalkeeping cardinal sin.

Though the second goal would have kept some keeping he out, he was still beaten at his near post and his attempt to make a save was incredibly unconvincing, just seemed to flail his limbs.

He really is a strange case, I find it hard to believe that he is just as bad as he appears. It must surely be the fact that he just is not at all suited to the Premiership, as given the amount of people to sing his praises whilst playing in Spain I find it hard to believe that he is just genuinely crap. But similarly, it seems strange that he would be a great deal more effective in Spain, as even if the Spanish league is not renowned for it's physicality and so on, surely a team would have worked out how to bully him in the same way more or less every English side has.

Could well be serious lack of confidence. Goalkeeping is a scary job, and not being confident hurts you more in the position than it does in others imo. Could be why they're persisting with him too.

Whilst I wont argue with that, I'd say it was an awful game to bring him back into if thats the case. Given his lack of confidence with the cross/corner, to put him against the arial prowess of Liverpool, at Anfield, is asking too much.

What worried me the most is the 'pulled side' after the goal, and Lindegaard warming up...... Barthez used to get these 'injuries' when he was dropping clangers too. Subbing a keeper for anything other than an injury is a massive waste of time and limits a managers tactical options, so when a keeper shies off from embarrassment with an injury is disgraceful.

Not saying he tried to, but it looked like an 'excuse' from here

My take is that Fergie still sees something in the boy. He's generally a ruthless old swine with keepers. Taibi, who cost £4.5m, lasted four games & Jim Leighton, who'd been with him through the good years at Aberdeen was unceremoniously dumped before an FA Cup final replay for Les Sealey, never to return.

Could be he's mellowing in old age, but I don't buy it.

You're all giving Fergie too much credit. He's just not willing to completely give up on an £18m investment after four months.

But De Gea's current levels of direness are so extreme that there isn't really any reasonable excuse for letting him near a football pitch. I remember with Almunia it took everyone, but especially Arsenal fans, a while to appreciate just how bad he was. But going purely by his performances in England and shutting out the hype, De Gea's even worse. He's been the worst keeper in the Premiership without question, and there probably aren't many Championship keepers worse than he is. Actually, given that the style of football exposes his weaknesses more severely the further down the ladder you go, there's probably only a handful of clubs in the entire football league that he'd be first choice for. But Fergie thinks he can play him in the most important position and still win trophies, and it's already put us out of the cup and the champion's league. The points he's cost us in the league are quite likely to prove crucial too, but the least he can do now is try to limit the damage.

I can understand not wanting to give up on an investment that large completely. But the manner in which he has done it has been very questionable imo. From what I heard the other day, he hasn't played any reserve games since being dropped from the side. To throw a player who's been massively under the kosh for a while now into a high-profile fixture like the one at the weekend without having played any proper matches for about a month or so is asking for trouble imo.

Oh dear Uppercut, really, really gone mentally off the boil there.

Yeah he's a shocker at the ball into the box, and a few keepers have been at first in England, most tend to adapt. However he's a very good shot stopper, and has shown at least a willingness to try and overcome his faults (even if he's failed quite spectacularly)

To suggest he'd not waltz in someone like QPR's side though is laughable. Granted the majority of Premiership teams have managed to settle into a position where they have a reliable keeper, something that doesnt happen that much, and that does add weight to your argument (plus Carsons ****ed off to Turkey). But I'd suggest the vast majority of teams would love to have him, probably as an understudy, but with an eye to bringing him through within a year or two.

However, you miss two keepers who are worse than De Gea. Robinson and Cech.

Robinson pulls off some beauty saves, like De Gea, but has his brainfart moments and gets beat too easily sometimes, like De Gea.

Cech however, is like De Gea if he doesnt get over his weaknesses in 10 years time. Scared of the ball, of the opposition, of contact. Give him a save and he's ok, give him pressure and he crumbles. However his past keeps him in the side (that and the backup are Turnbull and Hillarious). The fact that Chelsea have conceeded more in 11 away games than Utd have conceeded in all 22 games states quite a lot.

I think De Gea's ineptitude has been exaggerated by the quality of goal-keeping in the Premier League this season. So many keepers have been excellent, I've found.

Not often I disagree with you CPR, but think I will have to here. De Gea's shot-stopping seems alright at times. Indeed he made a decent one against Liverpool early on at the weekend, but there have been a number of times when he's looked pretty dodgy when dealing with shots from distance, and if I understand things correctly this is something that he was often singled out for whilst playing in Spain.

I honestly don't think he'd get into many other Premiership teams' first eleven either. He certainly wouldn't waltz in, in any case. He may have a great deal more technical ability than some of the other keepers in the league, but in practical terms he just has not been effective. Essentially he's just not geared for the job he has to do. Even if he has the style (which I'm not sure he does), he simply at this moment does not have the substance to perform. Contrast this to a goalkeeper like Paddy Kenny (who I do not rate at all), has very little style (or technical ability, if you will) but he know's what the jobs about and what's required of him.

Similarly I would have Robinson and Cech over him, not because they are any great shakes themselves, but I really think they've got a bit more about them than De Gea.
