Big loss, can't understand why on earth they would want to be rid of him tbh, but ah well, this is encouraging for all the other top sides at any rae.
Since when did we want rid of him?

It's well known that we wanted him to stay, but Xabi wanted to move and handed in a transfer request.

Well, true as that may be, Liverpool were obviously not reluctant to sell, the whole Barry saga from last year showed how Rafa clearly had no problems with getting shot of him.

In the 97-98 season, the mighty whites drew 8 games in a row 0-0. That's better than winning 1-0 IMO.

Looks almost certain to be Aquilani - there's strong rumours that a deal has already been agreed at around £18m and he'll be brought in as soon as the Alonso move is finalised.

Still talk that the other £12m from the Alonso sale will go toward Lee Cattermole.

Would laugh if it did, none of the replacements touted have anywhere near as much ability as Alonso, Poulsen is a decent player, but as said already offers only a fraction of Alonso's passing ability, maybe a better tackler, but when Mascherano already does that job perfectly well he again wouldn't really add much to the side. Aquilani similarly really, probably a better option than Poulsen, but not exactly a player of Alonso's calibre.

Few are Alonso's calibre. Alonso style of play doesn't have many people comparable to him either. Deep-lying playmakers like him aren't that common.

Aquilani probably won't be as good as Alonso in doing his job, but he adds more going forward and is more versatile, so I would be happy if he came. I just hope he stays fit because he has a history of injury.

Mmm, the only other deep lying midfielder I can think of who I particularly rate is Pirlo, if Chelsea can sign him then that is a major coup imo.

The reports today are that Milan are asking £15m and Chelsea will pay it. Big money for a 30 year old but if he makes the difference for Chelsea, particularly in the CL, then probably worth it.
