The strange case of Mario Jardel. That man has one of the craziest goalscoring records in history. He made his name with Porto, where he hit 130 goals in 125 games. Then he went to Galatasaray for $16m, where he scored "only" 22 in 24 games but fell out of favour somewhat. He defected to Sporting Lisbon after a year where he proceeded to score 53 in 49 games.

Sam Allardyce snapped him up for Bolton on a free transfer, but didn't play him because he couldn't get fit. He hasn't ever quite been the same since.

Jardel wasn't much of a footballer, but he's the best finisher I've ever seen. He just didn't miss. Ever.
He was a great goal scorer and in pomp, top five strikers in Europe.

I wouldn't read much into what he did after Turkey, he is a self-confessed coke addict who liked a drink. Wife also did a number on him.

Time he turned up at Bolton he was finished.

' Pompey manager Paul Hart is hoping to sign striker Benjani from Manchester City.
Full story: The Sun

However, that deal could be scuppered by Sven-Goran Eriksson's Notts County, who are ready to make a club record offer for the 31-year-old.
Full story: Daily Mirror '

Notts County are probable for a deadline day shock, Sven to stock up on players he had at Man City that were actually rubbish.
Benjani can only go on loan. Zimbabwe are out of Fifa's top 70 and Citeh yesterday didn't book a work permit meeting.

1019: DONE DEAL: Stoke sign Danny Collins from Sunderland for £2.75m. Wow, we even get a fee, too. Well done both clubs. By the way, you like the done deal graphic? I hope you're sick of it by tonight.

First confirmed Premiership deal...not a huge one.
Stoke are buying a fair few, think they'll stay up with Tuncay on board as well.

That is why I never understood some of the critism levelled at Ruud van Nistelrooy when he was at MU. Most people could see he and Thierry Henry were different players (and Henry being a better player), and RVN's job was just to stick the ball in the net, and that is what he did. Sticking the ball is what wins you Premierships etc.
It didn't though, in Ruud's case, which is why I don't really agree. Saha/Larsson did a much better job up front the year after Ruud left while scoring a fraction of the goals. A good 20% of his Premiership goals were penalties anyway.

Was an absolute beast in the Champs League though.

How much are Mansfield getting?

Mansfield Town manager David Holdsworth told BBC Radio Nottingham:

"Sometimes you need an architect to open a door and I don't think we had that today.

"I like architects and we might have signed one - the chairman and I have been working on it for quite a while.

"Sometimes you have to be patient but I believe the player we're bringing in we've got at the right time."

Apparently we're getting someone, keeping eyes peeled to see who it'll be. We've got no money, so would be on a free i'd have thought.

Rangers looking at taking PSG's Jerome Rothen on loan. Rafael van der Vaart has pledged to stay at Real Madrid for the time being.

Norwood's on Fire
I'm certain that RVN was part of United EPL win in 2002-03.
He was

He scored for fun in Europe though. I've never bought into the argument that a striker's penalty goals are somehow worth less as they still need to be scored.

1054: American midfielder Freddy Adu is moving from Benfica to smaller Portuguese rival Belenenses. Oh how the (predicted to be) mighty have fallen. Meanwhile, I've just heard a rumour that Liverpool's Andriy Voronin is moving to Arsenal. That's a corker.

ITSTL.

What the hell's he supposed to do? Warm the bench?

From Anon, via text on 81111: "I work for Fulham FC. The loan signing of Carlos Vela from Arsenal until the end of the season will be announced shortly. Have to remain anonymous I'm afraid!"

BBC Sport's roving reporter Sam Lyon: "Unsurprisingly, getting hold of football agents on the last day of the transfer window can be trickier than a four-foot-square Rubix Cube, but luckily for you good people I have a direct line to the biggest and the best by way of a batphone. Now, I have more digging to do to firm up what I've just been told by my high-profile man-in-the-know, but here's a teaser, to be taken with a pinch of salt for now: a big-money transfer will happen in the north-west today, with Everton and Liverpool, as well as Man City, ready to splash the cash; Arsenal hope to do a late deal for a midfielder; and Portsmouth are in the process of negotiating 427 incoming signings, of which maybe three will come off. I may have exaggerated the last one, but you get the idea."
