Bates' batting numbers are at the bottom end of the group, but would not be the lowest. However, they were never going to be the "enticing" part of the package... he is also arguably the best pure keeper in the country, which you would imagine ought to be worth a little, all the more so in the shorter forms where skills standing up are all the more relevant.

His limited overs batting numbers are very bad sadly.
36 List A games at an average of 8.36 with a strikerate of 62, and 37 t20 games with an average of 10. That is dire.
When I seen Hampshire last year they were hiding him down the order, pretty sure he batted at 10 in one of the games I seen him.
His keeping is awesome, but I understand why people may not be keen.
He did train with Essex recently, so I dunno maybe in a year or so he may be signed as a back up to Foster and may be eased into the team once the great man starts to drop formats.
