Good start by Harmison against Surrey as his impressive season (although the value of such in selection is debated, I know) continues. 8-4-7-1 before lunch.

Its not just this season.

In the last 18 months in FC domestic cricket in England and South Africa he has been in by far the best form of his career taking over 100 wickets at around 22.

I remember him starting the 2007 CC season very well and hoping it might translate into some decent form in the tests against WI. Didn't happen though.

Indeed, but I've given up arguing that Harmison is in the process of earning a recall.

I also rate Kabir Ali, btw. The lack of pace which had him out of his depth at international level is also gone too, as he often bowls at 87mph.

Go for Kabir Ali instead. 86 wickets @ 23.5 in those past 18 months.

(seriously, would like someone to explain the difference between Kabir and Sidebottom)
I have not seen Ali bowl for a while so he could have picked up a yard in pace as Manee suggests.

However, assuming he hasn't, then Sidebottom maybe half a yard quicker, 4 inches taller, and a left arm bowler that offers a different challenge to the right arm medium quicks at the other end.

Ha, how did you quote that i deleted it.
I must have been too quick for you.
Good timing all round actually - his dismissal came about 5 minutes after I wrote elsewhere that I coud see him back for the India series. Which still might happen, of course, but still mildly ironic.

Fair nuff. Not suggesting that he'd be selected over SB btw, but rather that the cases are rather similar: a player was selected for 1-2 Tests with rubbish results, sent back to county, and then did well in county for a prolonged period without getting much recognition - and the bowler who's been selected on that has been England's best over the past 12 months. Compare Anderson & Broad who are selected mainly on "tools" and/or youth rather than performance and haven't got that good results on the board.

Yeah I agree with that. Its hard to argue that he couldnt do a decent job if called up based on the experienced and skilled professional model.

Though I dont think anyone from this model (Sidebottom, Ali, Bicknell etc) can really be a leader of a quality Test attack.
