For me, Essex are fine with batsmen at the moment (although a quality opener wouldn't go amiss). I'd like to see us get another high quality FC seamer. Masters has been excellent this season, but there's not a lot in support or coming in at first change. Napier, on his day, is lethal with the new ball, but can be expensive. Wright, Ahmed, Palladino, Chambers etc are all promising, but not exactly pushing for consistent selection. Perhaps Matthew Hoggard, if Yorkshire can't afford to keep him, now he's no longer centrally contracted.

Considering Gough's retiring, I think Yorkshi*e can afford Hoggard.

In seriousness - it's baffled me, completely. Given he was signed pre-ICL, I was licking my lips given his phenomenal First-Class strike-rates with Sussex in 2005, 6 and 7, especially given he could only expect more helpful surfaces going from Hove to Headingley. How he's gone so dreadfully this year is beyond me, 100%.

Injuries obviously never help, but UIMM he's not had anything particularly major in the last 12 months, so I don't think it can be that big a factor. It's not like his Sussex success was pure fluke either, his domestic-FC record in Pakistan is superb, even if his Test one is woeful.

Sometimes, I guess, these things just happen. Rana isn't old, but look at Jason Gillespie - he completely lost it (though admittedly only temporarily) at 30, and Rana like Gillespie has always been old beyond his years - he was balding at 26.

Either way, I hope we get someone with no ICL connections in next season who can actually do us a good job. And if Mark Cosgrove starts actually looking like he's prepared to make a bit of sacrifice for his game's sake, he really would be my choice.

It'd help if you guys actually picked Palladino, instead of leaving him out for countless inferiors of his. Borderline disgrace that he started the season superbly, got injured then didn't get back in for yonks as the vastly inferior (if pacier and better with bat) Wright and Napier were preferred.

Don't really see Ahmed or Chambers (or that Westfield chap who hasn't played this season) amounting to anything either really, though they've been around for less time than the Wrights and Napiers.

I imagine Essex will just look to re-sign Danish Kaneria won't they? And hope he's around for the full season next time instead of missing the start then getting injured.

Masters, Palladino, part-timers like ten Doeschate and Bopara (both of whom have done well this year) and the spin duo of Kaneria and Middlebrook is among the better attacks going around.

And as you say, Cook, Chopra\Westley, Mickleburgh, Bopara, Pettini, ten Doeschate, Foster is a powerful batting unit.

Not terribly keen on the idea of signing him TBH, though it seems as though it may be a done deal. And though his record remains moderate, there would be many worse overseas-players next year should he be able to play a full or relatively full term.

Have just had a quick look, and his case really shows how Surrey are scraping the barrel currently. Hodgson has averaged 23 and 36 (with bat and ball respectively) for the second-team this season. If that's first-team material I'll eat my computer.

Lanky 162 on and a place in to Division 1 to fight for - what wouldn't we give for an opening burst from Fred and the Burnley Express - it's at times like this I hate central contracts!

Fred I fear that one way or another we won't be seeing each other in either CC or Pro-40 cricket next season.

Direct thy hate at the volume of international cricket, not central contracts. If we'd had the sensible quota of 6 Tests and 10 ODIs this summer, we'd not need to be resting players from end-of-season games. It's the overdose of international cricket that's to blame, causing the players to need rest. Not the fault of those who realise this rest is needed so thus give it.

And imagine how much worse the situation would have been had the "Champions" Trophy gone ahead. International players all across the world must be delighted to have a break at last.

Kent 4-1 btw. Could be a good game and potential disaster for Sussex.
Although Durham are now 9 down - and a 5fer for Sami.

Dont worry Mr Z Sussex are far too good to go down - it's us or the tykes I'm afraid and if Kent get to 163 we're doomed

Durham 380 all out, 6 wickets for Sami. You're right Richard, he looks a decent signing now doesn't he?

Edit: Correction: cricinfo has now given Sami's 6th wicket to Luke Wright. Obviously the scorers found it impossible to believe that Luke could have taken a wicket, and it sent them into a spin

Was baffled he went on the A-tour last winter. Just don't see the use in it. He'll be 34 next summer.

That said I do wish he hadn't missed the first half of this season through injury. Pretty well every proper bowler who's taken a decent (ie, 10+) number of wickets currently averaging under 20 this season has missed some portion of the year for some reason, which is frustrating TSTL.

Aye, you've got a point there but Murtagh his teammate must be in real contention. Might be a bit judgemental to say how he'd fair on non-responsive pitches where the ball isn't swinging.

Usually bowls about 125kph and seems to get his wickets in suspiciously big hauls every few games.
