Averages 32 for Somerset in list A. Don't think he's the answer there.

If he's a late bloomer and happens to be having his breakout season, there's not a great deal to stop him adding his name to the Test hopefuls though.

I really do like the look of Keith Barker. Continues to improve. Don't know if he'll end up just a decent county pro or something better but he's been excellent since he started playing consistently in first class cricket.
One of the worst professional footballers I have ever seen but improving all the time as a cricketer. Should be able to carry on well into his 30's as he has less wear and tear not having played when he was a growing teenager.

Tbf there are quite a few youngsters hopeful of a place in the ODI team. Quite hard to get Compton in IMO.

Well there is a slot at number 6 in the test side up for grabs and Compton may have a chance of sneaking that as he is a man in form.

Yeah, wouldn't have credited it at the start of the season, but every chance he'll get a Lions pick, and who knows if he gets a ton there.......

I've never really be one for just picking "the man in form" unless it's an injury fill-in, as form by nature is cyclical and will run dry. You don't want to be having to replace the guy in six months when his purple patch turns brown; you want to make sure the runs he's scoring are a product of overall quality as much as they are form, which is why I'm slightly more of a long-term analysis man than some.

However, while he clearly is in good touch at the moment, that's not all he's got going for him. He scored over 1000 runs last season in Division 1 at an average over 56 which was by far the best season from a England-qualified batsman not named Trescothick. I think he's really starting to climb out of the "having a good run" category into the "late bloomer finally finding consistency" category, like Trott just before he got picked. It'd be an inspired move, IMHO.

Zimbabwe will be kicking themselves though; he came out a couple of years ago and expressed interest in playing international cricket for them but nothing came of it.

Him and Ballance gone ... imagine them in the top order with Taylor.

At least the days of a theoretical could-have-been team completely comprised of ex-pats being indisputably better than the actual side are gone; it'd be close now as I can't think of any Zimbabwean bowlers still plying their trade elsewhere other than Anthony Ireland. Ervine, de Grandhomme and Cameron would get through a lot of overs at Taylor and Sibanda in a hypothetical match...

Nice to see Ravi Bopara getting all the credit he deserves over these pages for making an unbeaten 117 while the rest of the Essex side managed just a further 60 runs off the bat.Clearly not good enough Rav, it seems had you not run out of partners and stuck another one on top of it you could be talked about in the same breath as Nick Compton for an England call-up (I do actually like Compton too).

Some quick wickets needed early tomorrow for Essex, hoping Masters and Mills can do the business and lead the way, at least Jaques has gone already.

Ugh. What a complete load of nauseating ****e. Do they even remember what he was like last season? ****ing whining like no other because the ball moved a bit and constantly getting out cheaply - apparently this qualifies as "reasonable success". As usual in his innings he was dropped, and that's just the one they tell us about. One swallow does not make doesn't make a summer, unless you're a Cricinfo writer banging on about your favourite sad-sack from Essex.

Gloucestershire need to declare now please. Payne is injured is the only worry but they're bound to lose a session today so they need to declare now.

Typical A.Gidman and Marshall though, stockpiling runs when the match situation is strongly in Gloucestershires favour. A Gidman does deserve some credit for marshalling our bunch of 20 year olds.

Refuse to get excited about this, we'll get screwed by the weather and some stout resistance.

No.

Just no.

A moderate County player nowhere near Test ability.

The sort of pick that I recall was common in the 1970s made by those who looked at the newspapers and averages far more than the game.

Dreadful then, dreadful now.

And if I were a betting man I'd put a tenner down without worry that Onions will not play another Tset. He always seemed to get an easy ride when he bowled poorly in Tests and was over praised when he bowled well. Nowhere near as good as the top 5 seamers now and there are other younger ones who will challenge him.

Hoping the weather keeps the pitch bowler friendly at The Oval today.

Gloucestershire are killing me.

Yorkshire declare leaving opposition 262 to win. Gloucestershire are still batting with the lead at over 350. useless.
