Do feel for him, probably not Test class, but he was on a hiding to nothing opening the batting
Hmm, he's not in the top 10 middle-order bats in the country IMHO, they like him a lot so they've giving him a chance as opener. Cricket isn'tr fair, but sometimes you've just got to take any opportunity, unfortunately Lawrence hasn't, 13 Test matches. Yeah he's been giving less of a chance than many (crawley, Pope) but he's been giving more of a chance than dozens of other potential England players.

At least Duckett looks the goods as an opener.

I don't think he was originally an opener, the first I saw of him he was batting for the Brisbane Heat in the middle order, I thought he was a T20 merc.

I was surprised to see him opening for England in test cricket but he has teken to it like a duck to water.

Nice pun there! Went to India and Bangladesh back in 2016, struggled, had a few disciplinary issues, but clearly, like Crawley, fits what Baz and Stokes want. It’s a tough gig, he’s doing well

I get that there isn’t anyone new really bashing down the door to be considered for the opener role, but what were they expecting this series from Lawrence? Think they’ve set him up to fail

Most batsmen don't really want to open, it's a tough gig but if that is your only option to bat in the team you just have to make the most of it.

Like Duckett and Crawley have, Lawrence would probably prefer to bat at no.3 or no.4 but he isn't going to bat there with Pope and Root there.

After 2/21 today, Woakes needs to get 54 (or 26*) in order for his batting average to sneak past his bowling average (both a shade under 28). Whether or not he gets there, I’d fancy him to further lower his bowling average in Sri Lanka’s second innings

Obviously England have simply played much better, regardless of the conditions, but how differently would this game have panned out if Sri Lanka had chosen to bat when the pitch was looking immaculate? Not looking a 196 all out pitch, but there’s more there for the bowlers now

Great day for the england crowd to risk sunburn for, even if there were only 76.3 overs. Woakes did a very good impress of Jimmy when bowling and on another day, easily could have had a 5fer. But maybe after that Gus ton, hes gonna have to bat lower;)

The usual bazball barrage after theyd taken 7 wkts bowling pretty full, at least gave the Slankan fans something to cheer for. I think England made the wrong call not replacing Crawley with Cox, but perhaps Lawrence will come good at the oval.

Has anyone ever seen Dan Lawrence and Joe Denly in the same room together?
An insult to the great man. Lawrence isn't half the top order bat. One of the most ungainly looking techniques I can remember seeing for opening the batting, just not even close to an opener.

Kinda hard for Pope to succeed in the eyes of critics today since the 3rd innings after a big lead is pretty much universally recognised as the easiest time to bat, but it'd be nice for him to show off why he's in the team. We also aren't exactly in a position to pick and choose which hundreds from our top three count for more

I'd love Pope to do well today. We need him scoring seeing as we know he will be playing in Pakistan and New Zealand. Guess today we bat 2 sessions then declare after tea and a few overs of fun at 10 an over.

That catch reminded me of the 1982 MCG Boxing Day test match where Botham dismissed Jeff Thomson with a rebound catch in the slips to win it.
