***Official*** England vs Sri Lanka 21st August-10th September 2024

England are in a decent enough position and I’m sure it’ll get trickier later on (I haven’t checked the forecast!) but is 400 even par? The Sri Lankan bowlers are game (though Kumara looks to have tired), but the pitch is doing nothing and 4 of the wickets have fallen to ugly slogs, if numbers 8 and 9 can put on the runs they have while looking pretty untroubled it doesn’t reflect well on those batting above them…

I wonder how many more tests before brooks average drops below 50?
He’s 199 runs ahead of the mark with 3 more innings to come this summer (where he’s averaged 45) with a winter in Pakistan (where absolutely blitzed the hilariously flat pitch at Rawalpindi last time out) and New Zealand where the pitches are pretty flat, and where he did well last time, I’d say he’ll stay above the mark for a while yet

Think it’s my favourite thing about this era. Mini-collapses remain regular but completely sub par first innings scores are pretty rare
But there was plenty of danger of being bowled out for less than 300 as well. Sri Lanka have preyed successfully on the weakness of the top three, but they lacked the depth to trouble the middle order enough. The likes of Kumara looked all too weary by the end of play. The Sri Lanka batting lineup has depth so it is hard to know how this plays out but they should feel disappointed not to already be batting and have taken a not insignificant chunk out of the deficit they might have had.

Man I'm just so grateful to be experiencing the entirety of Root's career, hope he goes on for a while yet.

Also, getting Mitchell Johnson vibes from Atkinson's batting. Stays still and hits the ball so cleanly. Feel like Johnson underperformed a little relative to his talent, but a similar career for Atkinson would make him a great 9.

The cricviz folks were saying this is the lowest amount of swing for Lords they had on record, and very low for lateral seam movement too. Which fits with the feeling the England batsmen have gotten themselves out rather than the bowling forcing wickets.

Just hope he can sledge better than Johnson!

Another shocker from Reiffel, no idea why he gave that, always looked to be sliding down.
He's normally pretty good with his lbw calls but he's had a couple of dodgy calls so far in this test, he's either out of form or he doesn't like England.

Atkinson into the 90s, I was joking about him scoring a ton like Root when he got off to a good start yesterday but it's a real possibility now.
