Kent had about 4 or 5 ICL players or summat. Northants a similar number. Mostly Kolpaks, of course.

Dire. That explains why Lancashire released Law.

Hardly d-i-r-e - Law had the option to make them hold him to his contract, as he still had a year left to run, and he did not take that up. He was evidently happy to go and play ICL. In any case, 2008 was a very poor season by his standards.

Saqlain's contract appears to have finished at the end of last season. In order to be offered a new contract, the player needs to make it worth his county's while. Surrey evidently believe that a) Saqlain isn't outstandingly good any more and b) his presence handicaps them in other areas. Both of which are quite fair enough complaints.

I think you probably mean "citing", but that's a shame.

Also, there are no long-term Kolpak deals, surely? The ruling is no more after next season. If du Preez wants to play long-term for a county he'll have to qualify for a British passport, won't he?

Also found it of interest to note that counties are being encouraged to disassociate with ICL players.

I don't imagine it was much of a secret, given the ECB initially thought they'd be able to ban ICL players completely.

I for one am highly pleased to see counties taking anti-ICL stances, especially if they're being encouraged rather than forced into doing it. We are only as strong united and all that.

It depends on his contract.

If it was a one-year contract which has expired, then Slurrey are likely to be OK. The non-renewal of that contract would amount to a dismissal and if the contract takes him to a full year's service then he would have the right to bring a claim of unfair dismissal. However I've seen nothing to suggest that such a dismissal would be unfair.

If the contract was for more than one year, then Slurrey would face a claim for breach of contract for the salary which Saqi would have received in the unexpired portion of his contract had he not been dismissed. However even if his contract was to last for more than a year, there may have been a term in the contract entitling Slurrey to terminate the contract early in specified circumstances, which might kill of a breach of contract claim. However even if there were such a term, they might still face an unfair dismissal claim where the issue would in essence be whether they had acted reasonably (ie in a manner in which it was open to a reasonable employer to act). There's a limit on the amount of damages you can be awarded for unfair dismissal which in Saqi's case would be £63,330.

Coincidentally, £63,330 is also the fee that I am charging for this Opinion. Payments to the usual address please GIMH.

And couldn't Saqi injunct all and sundry for inducement for breach of contract? or am I being a silly old hack?

Saqi will be picked up by an ICL county their are still plenty of them left,same with klusener and stu law.

Their are counties that won't release their ICL players because they form such a critical part of the side.
That said stu law and saqi are huge losses for lancashire and surrey,they won't replace that experience or consistency.
Heard yorkshire interested in law,and they already have a ICL player in rana naveed.

Counties who don't care about not being able to play in the Champions League, who only care about what they do in competitions here. And counties who have no wish to sign BCCI-controlled Indian players.

Rana Naved-ul-Hasan has been released from Yorkshire. I presume his shockingly poor bowling last season had a fair amount to do with that, but his ICL connections might have also been a part. If they sign Law, we'll know that the latter certainly isn't the case.

Yassir Arafat has indeed re-signed for Sussex. Great player, great guy, great signing, and a return to his spiritual home. IPL till at least the end of May, though, so Mo Sami might fill in until then.

Surprised rana naveed released must have been done so in the last week,who they lining up to replace him.
