*Official* England in West Indies 2022

Very disappointed in this pitch tbh. I felt West Indies could win in pace friendly conditions as we have the stronger seam attack on this tour. But instead we got 2 roads.

I suspect we have produced roads to ensure 5 days cricket and more $$$ for CWI. I suppose if that enables them to reopen the academy and host A team tours again it's worth it, but from a West Indies perspective this series feels particularly soulless. Like we're being great hosts but in the process losing any semblance of Caribbean identity.

Root the best post-war England bat, everyone agree yeah?

NB I amended from English to England just to emphasise that he’s better than Pietersen
Barrington? May? Boycott? Root?

Pretty hard to separate imo. There could be pretty good arguments for all four.

Incidentally in the CW batsman rankings being done at the moment, Barrington was ranked 20th, Boycott 29th, Root 36th, and May 46th.

counterpoint: has to do something in australia first

glaring mark on his record, just like it's a glaring mark on an australian cricketer's record to go to england and be dogshit

arguably but think he will definitely be there by the end of his career...

The pitches are whatever but the WI have done themselves no favors with their woeful fielding.

Root better than Pietersen and probably the best since the 60s. With Pietersen, his Test career was pretty much all playing in a strong batting lineup until it unravelled in that Ashes series. Root has had to carry the burden of being the only world class bat since Cook.

The Seales paddy was when Lawrence was dropped at slip. It was Roach who fell to his knees head in hands bemoaning his luck when an awful delivery drifting a foot down the leg side was put down by the keeper diving full length one handed.

Agreed, it’s really not close or at least it won’t be assuming Root goes on to have a 12+ year career.

Can you imagine what Roots average would be batting in the flat pitch era and batting at #4 or #5 after Cook/Strauss/Trott? KP was also lucky as he debuted at the age of 25 when he was probably at his peak and played his last test before he probably would have declined and his average really took a hit. Only an 8 year career.

Is it just me who thinks the Windies are two quick wickets away from being right back in this match?

Yeah England go from 240/3 to 350ao quite frequently. Would need someone to bowl a very good spell though.

Can't see it on this pitch though. We do actually have a very skillful seam attack and they got hardly anything out of this surface.
